As a Military Police sailor (known in the Navy as Naval Police Coxswain), you’ll be a critical component of the Military Justice System. Your role will be to maintain military effectiveness, protect the reputation of the Australian Defence Force and ensure that discipline and order is upheld at sea and ashore. You will also work in a variety of environments, including joint military police units, Navy shore establishments and onboard ships. As is the nature of policing and military service, many roles involve working outside of a normal working day.
Your role involves three primary functions, policing, security and emergency management.
Your duties include, but aren’t limited to:
1. General Duties policing and law enforcement
2. Crime scene preservation and management
3. Conduct investigations, including interviews and evidence
4. Anti-piracy, including the seizure of illicit drugs or weapons
5. Liaising with domestic and foreign police and authorities
6. Conduct prisoner and detainee handling
7. Security risk analysis and management
8. Emergency Management and Coordination
9. Coordinate, supervise and conduct substance and alcohol testing
As a Member of the ADF Military Police, you will be trained in a range of police specific operational safety techniques, service pistol and non-lethal use of force. Throughout your career you will be required to maintain currency in those operational safety techniques.
As a sailor, you’ll learn additional skills and duties to become highly trained and efficient in supporting the whole ship. This may include ship security, firefighting team, flood repair, flight deck duties, ammunitioning, first aid or line handling.
