About the Role:
The role involves developing and implementing an advanced research program in rock physics to support seismic monitoring of geological carbon storage.
Responsibilities include:
* Designing and conducting experiments to measure rock properties under varying conditions.
* Enhancing and maintaining laboratory equipment for seismic and ultrasonic testing.
* Analysing rock deformation and fluid distribution using advanced imaging techniques.
* Publishing research findings and securing external funding.
* Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
* Contributing to geophysics teaching at Curtin University.
Who we are looking for:
An enthusiastic experimental researcher with 10+ years’ experience in developing rock physics equipment as well as measurements and analysis of rock properties to support field-based applied geophysics research.
Essential:
* PhD in physics, materials science, geophysics or a related discipline.
* A record of excellence in experimental rock physics research as demonstrated by a solid record of publications in scientific journals.
* Experience in developing and building forced-oscillation equipment for measuring elastic and viscoelastic properties of rocks at seismic frequencies and elevated temperatures and pressures.
* Experience in developing and building equipment for measuring elastic properties of rocks at ultrasonic frequencies.
* Experience in measurements and analysis of elastic and viscoelastic properties of rocks using forced-oscillation and ultrasonic equipment at elevated temperatures and pressures.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively with the research team and external stakeholders to achieve successful and timely delivery of research project outcomes.
Desirable:
* Experience in using X-ray micro-CT equipment to image pore-scale structure of sedimentary rocks.
* Experience in using distributed fibre-optic sensing to measure rock properties.
* Experience in successful supervision of research students.
* Experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching.
* Experience of successful project applications to attract external funding for rock physics research.
Role Requirements:
* As this is a fixed-term contract, you will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role.
