POSITION OBJECTIVE The primary role of the position of Laboratory Technician is to contribute to the effective and efficient management and administration of the Science Department by providing support to the Science teachers. The Laboratory Technician may also be called upon to assist in other related subject areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES SUMMARY Supporting the teacher to ensure a safe and stimulating educational environment;Supporting the teacher in planning and preparing for daily activities;Supporting the teacher in preparing lesson outlines, plans, and curriculum in assigned areas;Planning, preparing, and developing various practical teaching aids for use in classroom;Presenting subject matter to students under the guidance of a teacher;Supporting students with lesson assignments;Performing miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned;Outstanding interpersonal skills, with a proven capacity to cooperate with staff and students;Strong organisational and time management skills;A high degree of confidentiality and discretion;Strong attention to detail;Emotional resilience and effective conflict management skills;The ability to be flexible and work in a high-pressure environment;Liaising with science teaching staff on their needs for practical work;In consultation with teacher, trialing science experiments and developing appropriate practical activities;Assisting science teaching staff with demonstrations and instruction of students;Operating laboratory equipment and performing routine maintenance;Establishing and maintaining laboratory protocols and safety operating procedures;Active participation in workplace health and safety activities;Maintaining a safe chemical/laboratory waste storage system;Preparing chemical solutions for general classroom use;Maintaining scientific teaching resources, classrooms, and laboratories;Developing maintenance procedures and reporting damages to equipment;Maintaining accurate records of inventory and purchases;Undertaking general administrative activities as requested;Assisting with field trip preparations;Completing record keeping and stocktaking;Supporting preparing the science budget and maintaining a petty cash system.EXPECTED KNOWLEDGE, ATTRIBUTES AND COMPETENCIES Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;Ability to understand and follow safety procedures;Ability to provide activities for children that encourage healthy growth;Child supervision skills;Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for children;Skill in preparing instructional aids and plans;Emotional resilience and conflict management skills.MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS Applicants must hold a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) and be studying towards or hold a Diploma in Laboratory Operations.
