Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern ArtThe Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art seeks a qualified Cabinet Maker to join its production team.The position will work with a comprehensive range of specialist workshop machinery in house to produce high quality cabinetry, joinery, artwork display and storage solutions under the supervision of the Workshop Manager and Leading Hand - Cabinet Maker positions.The role will be required to work responsively and flexibly to the demands of the exhibition program adapting to a variety of tasks that may be specific to this trade area or more general in relation to the types of exhibitions the Gallery undertakes.The role works together with a range of fulltime and casual tradespeople and trade assistants, contractors, and staff from various disciplines.Work may be physical and requires a suitable level of fitness and mobility.Drawing on trade skills and experience in cabinet and furniture making, the Workshop Officer – Cabinet Maker position is required to work within a team of tradespeople to perform a key hands-on role in the preparation of a range of projects at the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art.This position sits within QAGOMA's Design Section which is comprised of the following teams:Exhibition DesignGraphic DesignWorkshopInstallationAudio Visual and LightingThe Design Section works closely with other internal teams and external stakeholders to design and build a wide range of exhibition outcomes for QAGOMA.
This section provides the Gallery with substantial in-house production potential allowing the Gallery to undertake ambitious, complex and innovative projects.The teams in this Section work closely and collaboratively to achieve common goals within a very active exhibition program with clearly defined deadlines and an expectation of high-quality outcomes.Key DutiesUsing cabinet making skills and experience to undertake materials selection, fabrication and finishing consistent with Gallery standards and specifications from the Gallery's in house exhibition design team and within defined timeframes.Understand architectural construction drawings, adapt CAD files for the Gallery's CNC machine, develop cutting lists and minimise waste to produce and assemble all necessary components for each jobAssist with the movement and installation of art works, both within the Galleries and at offsite locations, as required.Provide general assistance to all Gallery departments with the loading and unloading of delivery vehicles and the transport of goods and materials across the two Gallery sites.Assist with the setup of a range of temporary exhibition and public program events including art workshops, children's and family festivals, corporate functions and events.Assist with the supervision of casual Workshop staff and contractors as required.Ensure safe and effective operation and maintenance of relevant tools, machinery and equipment in both back of house and public spaces.
