Lawyer – Native Title This organisation is based in Northern Australia, however remote work arrangements are available. The successful candidate can be located elsewhere, with occasional travel. About the Organisation This respected not-for-profit peak body plays a vital role in supporting a network of Registered Native Title Bodies Corporate (PBCs). Established to assist Traditional Owners in managing their native title rights and interests across land and sea, the organisation operates in accordance with traditional laws and customs. About the Role As a Lawyer, you will join a passionate and highly skilled Native Title Services team. Your role will focus on delivering expert legal advice and services to safeguard and advance the rights of Traditional Owners under native title and associated legislation. This is a dynamic and rewarding role that involves litigation support, strategic legal planning, agreement negotiation, and legal capacity-building with communities. The position also contributes to policy development and organisational initiatives. You’ll work closely with Traditional Owners, PBCs, legal professionals, and key external stakeholders, playing a pivotal role in the region’s native title landscape. Occasional travel to remote communities will be required. Key Responsibilities Provide timely, practical legal advice to the organisation and its member PBCs. Lead or support native title claims, compensation applications, and related Federal Court proceedings. Draft legal documentation, statements, and instructions for counsel and experts. Represent native title claim groups in court and during negotiations, as required. Assist with the negotiation and implementation of ILUAs, cultural heritage agreements, and responses to future acts. Contribute to policy and law reform work by preparing briefings and legal submissions. Build trusted relationships with Traditional Owner groups and community leaders. Liaise effectively with external stakeholders including lawyers, anthropologists, and consultants. Promote legal literacy and native title awareness among community partners. Support legal education and capacity development within the organisation. What We’re Looking For A law degree and eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in an Australian jurisdiction. Sound knowledge of the Native Title Act 1993 and other relevant legislation (e.g., CATSI Act, Aboriginal Land Acts, Cultural Heritage Acts). Experience in litigation and familiarity with the Federal and State court systems. A demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and a commitment to working respectfully with First Nations communities. Excellent communication, negotiation, and advocacy skills. Willingness and ability to travel to remote communities as needed. A current Australian driver’s licence. Desirable: Minimum 2 years’ post-admission legal experience in native title, land rights, or administrative/public law. Why Join this organisation?
