Our Hunter/Central Coast Biodiversity & Conservation group is currently seeking to appoint a Senior Floodplain Officer in an ongoing full-time capacity.
The Environment and Heritage Group within DCCEEW brings together a range of functions including national park management, biodiversity and conservation, climate change, sustainability, resilience and adaptation, renewable energy and energy security, and circular economy policy. The work of the Group is supported by centres of excellence in policy; science; economics; data analytics and insights.
About the Role
The Senior Floodplain Officer drives the delivery of integrated water-cycle management and effective management of flood and drainage risks. This includes the delivery of studies and plans to manage flood risk. The role contributes to effective regional delivery of environmental programs by working with Councils to ensure floodplain risk management studies and plans are delivered within reasonable timeframes and are of a high quality. The role also provides technical and policy advice to Government and Local Councils.

4. Works with Councils to facilitate and influence the timely delivery of studies and plans, consistent with policy and best practice, including the engagement of the community and other relevant agencies.
5. Supports the development and implementation of floodplain risk management strategies that are consistent with risk management principles, integrate with coastal risk and estuarine/riverine management processes and consider broader community needs and environmental outcomes.
6. Provides specialist advice on floodplain and stormwater management for inclusion in responses to environmental planning and assessment matters and contributes to region-wide problem solving as required.
7. Maintains a high level of technical expertise in floodplain risk management, relevant technology and translates this into high quality projects and strategies.
8. Works within a team of Floodplain and Coastal Engineers and Scientists fostering a collaborative approach to natural resource management in the Hunter/Central Coast Region.
About You
The successful applicant will have:
9. Extensive knowledge and experience of floodplain risk and water-cycle impact assessment methods and floodplain management strategies.
10. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Government's Flood Prone Land Policy, Flood Risk Management Manual and related guidelines and legislation.
11. Detailed knowledge and experience in the application of hydrological and hydraulic models in analysing flood behaviour and flood hazards.
12. An understanding of the application of NSW Government policy related to the application of flood risk as it pertains to land use planning
Essential Requirements
13. Degree level tertiary qualifications in engineering, environmental science, natural resource management, or related discipline.
14. Current driver’s license (Class C)

Participation in the NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme (BOS) & BCT’s Private Land Conservation (PLC) Programs
All new employees with an existing defined interest in the BOS will be required to disclose their personal (or a close family member’s) participation to ensure potential conflicts are managed appropriately. In some circumstances this may require divestment of the interest.
The BCT also has restrictions on staff participation in its funded PLC programs. No additional funding, beyond that already agreed to by the BCT, may be sought or approved during time as a BCT employee or for a 12-month period following termination of employment.
