The Programs business unit develops and delivers a range of public programs, events and activities connected to the Museum’s vision, strategy, values, collections and exhibitions. Designed to engage diverse audiences with opportunities for life-long learning, the Museum’s program of high-quality, accessible programs aims to inspire, connect and challenge audiences, building knowledge, curiosity, creativity and empathy.
The Programs team develops audience-focused activities through best practice models, research and innovation, working in consultation and collaboration with colleagues across the Museum, as well as with external partners, stakeholders, professionals and communities. Programs are primarily delivered at the Museum’s Acton site, as well as throughout Australia and internationally, with an emphasis on online innovation.
The opportunity comes as the Museum is delivering on a new Strategic Plan (2023–27) and developing a public engagement strategy to better engage audiences, onsite and online.
The successful candidate will possess a range of programming and event coordination skills and experience, a proven ability to coordinate programs for a diverse range of audiences, and a capacity to coordinate and deliver multiple concurrent short-term projects while maintaining a strong attention to detail. The role is responsible for:
• contributing to the development, delivery and evaluation of creative and interpretive programs and events for diverse audiences that effectively build audience engagement. This includes facilitating learning programs and developing resources for children and families.
• coordinating projects through planning, production, promotion, event budget development and tracking, and risk management; as well as coordinating and supervising staff, volunteers and contractors to support program delivery
• working within a small, dynamic team with an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, with autonomy and accountability for project delivery
• contributing to the development of programs to ensure they are aligned with the Museum’s relevant policies and strategic priorities for learning and audience engagement
• contributing to the development of programs with a commitment to First Nations engagement, gender equity, cultural and linguistic diversity and accessibility principles
• working collaboratively, and in consultation with, a diverse range of internal stakeholders (including curatorial, development, marketing, commercial and visitor services) and externally with professionals and specialists, artists, community organisations, partners and other cultural institutions
• supervising and developing lower classification levels including building team capacity through mentoring and performance feedback
• contributing to business and strategic planning, budget management, reporting, grant applications and partnership agreements and monitoring audience responses
• maintaining an awareness of current trends in programming both nationally and internationally to ensure that programs are responsive and innovative
• ensuring that you and your team members have sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to undertake your work safely and efficiently.
Note: This position will require some work on weeknights, weekends and public holidays. It may also involve some strenuous physical activity.
