As a Marine Specialist Gap Year, you will be a valued member of the team in the Royal Australian Corps of Transport (RACT). The RACT has many tasks to perform including operating the Army fleet of landing craft and amphibious vehicles, all forms of road transport, distribution centres and specialist units. As a Marine Specialist Gap Year, you will learn to operate a variety of specialist watercraft, including amphibious craft and performs operator maintenance on Army marine vessels such as:
1. LCM-8 watercraft
2. LARC V
3. Small Watercraft up to 6m
4. Noosa Cat
As a Marine Specialist you will also transports all forms of cargo across the sea, inland water ways and ship to shore operations (LOTS). Postings can include Land Unit and Specialist Forces.
Your main Job Functions will be to:
5. Operate Army watercraft and amphibious craft
6. Perform deck hand duties on board Army Watercraft
7. Operate weapons fitted to amphibian and landing craft and
8. Operate communication and electronic navigation equipment
You’ll be managed throughout your training by professional and enthusiastic Army personnel, who will provide the guidance necessary for you to get the most out of this experience.
Once you have finished your training you’ll be posted to one of the Maritime units across Australia where you will receive on the job training. Here you’ll join an experienced team and have opportunities to put your new skills to the test. All while making friends and gaining experience that will last you a lifetime.
So, what happens next? After finishing your Gap Year program, you can choose to continue your career in the Army or use the skills and experiences to gain an edge in future careers. There’s no obligation to serve beyond the one-year program period.
