Accounting Investigations & Regulatory Advisor
Are you an experienced accounting professional (CA or CPA) or financial professional looking to transition into a new role? This may just be the role for you!
This position combines your technical accounting knowledge, risk management lens, investigative curiosity, and a desire to assist others in defining the right processes internally to create robust and compliant systems.
The Organisation
The ACT Law Society is the peak body for legal practitioners in the ACT. The Society represents, advances, and defends the interests of an independent legal profession in the ACT. They also protect the public interest in the ACT system of justice through efficient regulation of the profession as a whole, including trust accounting within firms across the ACT.
2024 has seen the ACT Law Society move into an exciting phase of growth and capability development across their regulatory function. With this growth comes opportunity. This brand new role will be pivotal in the development of the Society's internal function to audit, regulate, advise, and assist their members in building robust and compliant trust accounting processes and systems across the ACT.
How will it work?
Reporting to a knowledgeable and supportive Regulatory Manager, you will also have the full support, guidance, and training of the Finance & Business Services Manager to develop your knowledge of trust accounting and the legislation that governs it. Your functions will be diverse. Your technical accounting skills will enable you to investigate trust account reconciliations to identify errors, and your analytical problem-solving will help you identify patterns and trends.
You will work with members to establish processes and systems in their firms to increase compliance and reduce errors. You bring exceptional stakeholder and client engagement skills and are comfortable switching between providing support to achieve required outcomes and enforcing regulatory compliance activities.
Reporting outcomes regarding non-compliance with legislative requirements and suspected improper applications of trust money will be a key deliverable. You must be able to write professionally, detailing both facts and impact, ensuring clarity of recommendations.
With a commitment to continuous improvement, you enjoy training others, comfortable teaching one-on-one, as well as delivering regular sessions to enhance knowledge of trust accounting in practice leaders across the ACT's legal sector.
The diversity of this role will be rewarding for the right person. As it grows and expands towards a fully-serviced internal regulatory function, your agility and passion will see you successfully working with the leadership team to help shape the role as the function evolves.
What are we looking for in our successful candidate?
Your financial accounting skills are non-negotiable; you are either CA or CPA qualified (or in your final year) enabling you to supervise and intervene in external random inspections as required. You are comfortable forensically analyzing ledgers and reconciliations through a risk management lens.
Legal trust accounting knowledge is not required - this will be a key part of your training. You will learn from experts and operate with the full support of a network of trust account compliance officers around the country.
Experience in financial accounting within small business or non-profit environments will be highly regarded and transferable, as would exposure to audit, investigations, insolvency, or senior bookkeeping.
