The Nurse Practitioner/Transitional Nurse Practitioner (NP/TNP) Cancer Services works in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Oncology and Haematology Team providing clinical expertise to patients and staff working within the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Centre (NCCC). The NP/TNP Cancer Services works within a defined scope of practice operating at an advanced practice level and independently manages a range of patient conditions. The NP/TNP Cancer Services is able to provide comprehensive systematic patient assessment, determines appropriate interventions necessary to deliver advanced and holistic management of patients for treatment or symptom review and refers issues that are outside of scope to the Medical Oncology/Haematology Registrar or Oncologist/Haematologist.
The NP/TNP extends nursing practice by facilitating timely patient review and manages patients that present with toxicities that have received treatment at the NCCC.
The NP/TNP is an expert clinician who provides evidence-based autonomous clinical care for patients in accordance with current best evidence and relevant NSW Health and SESLHD Policies Procedure and Guidelines. The scope of practice complies with NSW Health Policy Directive Nurse/Midwife Practitioners NSW PD2012_026 and the Nursery and Midwifery Board of Australia's standards for Practice.
The NP/TNP Cancer Services role includes:
1. Advanced comprehensive assessment
2. Investigative and diagnostic interventions
3. Consultation with community and in patient medical teams
4. Referral to community health care workers and in patient medical teams
5. Prescribing of Medicines
The primary objectives of the NP/TNP are to optimise the management and coordination of oncology patients both in a Symptom Review clinic and the Haematology Oncology Day Centre (HODC) within the NCCC.
Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.
All workers and new recruits are required to receive 2 doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine to commence employment/ engagement or continue to work within a NSW Health service.
A worker and new recruit will be considered compliant if they have a medical contraindication to all available Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccines and provide medical contraindication evidence in line with the policy requirements.
In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.
Category A workers and new recruits who are non-compliant with seasonal influenza vaccination or have a medical contraindication to influenza or COVID-19 vaccinations must comply with all other infection control risk reduction strategies as directed while working in a Category A position.
6. Registered Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia including endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner or working towards same as per the NMBA Guidelines on endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner.
7. Post graduate qualifications at Masters level, in a NMBA approved program of study or relevant clinical specialty, or working towards.
8. Demonstrated high level knowledge and advanced clinical nursing skills including comprehensive assessment, interpretation of diagnostics, implementation of treatment modalities and relevant referral skills applied to a broad range of challenging, complex and changing situations.
9. Demonstrated understanding of the Haematology & Oncology care delivery system and ability to lead and implement changes and develop direction in clinical practice by the initiation, utilisation and review of evidence based research.
10. Proven high level knowledge and expertise in complex client centred consultancy, practice development activities including mentoring, education, active participation in communities of practice, policy development and quality improvement.
11. Demonstrated advanced clinical leadership role, negotiation, liaison, interpersonal and problem solving skills across the cancer services.
12. Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and accountability while also working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and multi service environment.
13. Current NSW Driver's License.
