The organisation is an Australian Government-owned Commonwealth Corporate Entity which plays a vital role in managing critical infrastructure and providing services to industry. The organisation is engaged in transformational, multi-billion-dollar programs and is looking for highly skilled and committed senior corporate counsel to support these critical, nation-building works.
Your new role
Working with a high degree of autonomy as part of a small team of senior legal counsel, the primary purpose of this role is to provide high-quality, responsive and practical legal advice and support to the organisation's critical programs and projects. The role will focus on commercial contracting for a wide range of projects. The role will be required to manage legal risk, support strategic outcomes and contribute to the successful delivery of the organisation's program of work across a variety of areas and disciplines. The role includes involvement in a number of construction-related matters, including construction contracting, contract management and disputes.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of complex agreements, including commercial and construction contracts
* Provide high quality timely and commercially focused legal advice across a range of matters including contracts, property, construction, and environmental law
* Assess, manage, and mitigate legal risks associated with critical procurement, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and best practices in contract management
* As required, lead the resolution of legal disputes, providing strategic advice and engaging in settlement negotiations to secure optimal outcomes for the organisation
* Build and maintain strong and trusted working relationships with internal teams and instruct and manage external legal providers to ensure cost-effective and efficient delivery of legal services
* Perform the role of Senior Legal Counsel with integrity, objectivity and independence, consistent with the obligations of a legal practitioner and demonstrate an understanding of the additional obligations of working for a Corporate Commonwealth entity
What you'll need to succeed
* Tertiary qualifications in law with a minimum of 5 years' post-qualification experience (PQE)
* Admitted as a legal practitioner in Australia with a current Practising Certificate
* Ability to hold and retain suitable security clearances
* Proven expertise in complex commercial contracting, with a strong background in procurement, services agreements, and government contracts. Experience in construction contracts will be viewed favourably
* Exceptional legal technical skills, including outstanding drafting abilities and a capacity to think critically and creatively when addressing legal and commercial challenges
* Strong commercial acumen and a track record of successfully navigating complex, high-stakes negotiations and risk management in a commercial context
* Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to distil complex legal issues into clear, actionable advice for non-legal stakeholders
