The Department
The Alfred Trauma Service is a department within the division of surgery at Alfred Health. It is one of two adult trauma centres serving the population of Victoria, as well as the Victorian New South Wales border and Northern Tasmania as designated by the Victorian State Trauma System (VSTS).
The Alfred site now includes an onsite helipad, five dedicated major trauma resuscitation bays, a 40-bed purpose-built trauma and orthopaedic ward and a state of the art 61 bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with an allocation of dedicated trauma beds. The Alfred Trauma Service admits 4,500 seriously injured patients per year, of whom 1,700 require Intensive Care. In patients vary between 50 to over 100. Our service provides evidence-based care for the States most time critical and seriously injured patients, and ensures smooth integration across all specialty departments from admission to discharge.
The Trauma service’s focus is on delivering patient-centred care to this cohort of complex patients within a supportive environment, whilst promoting accountability and safe practice. We work together as an interdisciplinary team to deliver excellence in patient experience and surgical care. The Trauma service delivers care within multiple Departments of Alfred Health including the community, the Emergency Department, the Intensive Care Unit, Operating Theatre and Ward In-patients and Outpatient settings.
Our aim is to recruit senior nurse clinicians who will provide a constant presence throughout the continuum of care, and to ensure clinical and procedural coordination for trauma patients and their families from admission through to discharge.
The Role
The Trauma Nurse Practitioner candidate is a registered nurse who has acquired the expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies to prepare for expanded practice. They are an integral member of the health care team who is working, in collaboration with other health professional, towards an increased level of professional autonomy to assess and manage clients within their clinical context using nursing knowledge and skills.
At Alfred Health every nurse must practice in accordance with the Alfred Health Nursing Professional Practice Framework. This defines the elements of nursing practice that improve the care and experience of our patients and staff. It is comprised of six domains that are crucial to maintain standards, lead change and add value to healthcare. These domains are Comprehensive Care, Leadership, Professional Development, Workforce, Research and Informatics.
The Nurse Practitioner Candidate will engage in clinical education, mentorship and professional activities to assist the development of extensions to practice including prescription of medications; ordering diagnostic investigations, procedural assistance, direct referral to other health care professionals, and the ability to admit and discharge patients and/or provision of absence from work certificates, within the limitations of their registration as a Registered Nurse.
Qualification & Experience Required
Academic
6. Current unrestricted registration as a Registered Nurse with Nursing and Midwifery board of Australia via AHPRA.
7. Masters of Nursing Science; or Bachelor Degree of Nursing (or equivalent) and Post graduate qualification (minimum graduate certificate) in a related clinical field
8. Holds or working towards a Masters of Nurse Practitioner (or a Masters granted equivalence of qualification by AHPRA and working towards an approved Therapeutic Medication Management module)
Experience
9. A minimum of five (5) years as a registered nurse, with two (2) years full-time equivalent (FTE) in this or a related clinical field and two years FTE of advanced nursing practice in the same clinical field within the last 6 years
