Deakin Research Innovations (DRI) is a division at the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) responsible for the commercial research operations and commercialising the University’s expertise, new technology and innovations. DRI team identifies, plans and implements strategies for growing commercial research income for the University in line with the Deakin 2030 Ideas to Impact strategy.

The Commercial Manager, Research (Society), will work closely with the Director, Commercial Research – Enabling Technologies & Society to contribute identifying future trends in commercial research needs of industry and government organisations; engaging them to expand Deakin’s research outreach by providing evidence-based solutions to industry-based challenging research problems.
The incumbent will have a particular internal client focus aligned to one or more of Deakin’s research strengths to build strong professional relationships with Deakin researchers and develop a strong understanding of their expertise and interest to identify and foster commercial research relationships with industry, government and other public and private sector organisations.
The successful applicant will contribute to the development of new strategies and initiatives for growing research, raising commercial research income, and managing commercially focused activities, including negotiating and costing research contracts.
Your key responsibilities will include:
4. Contributing to the development and maintenance of effective networks with government, industry, non-government organisations, technology developers, and providers in assigned portfolios to establish successful and long-term commercial research partnerships.
5. Supporting multi-disciplinary teams of researchers, enabling functions and external partners, to identify, develop and implement initiatives for growing research and industry-based projects, attracting funds for research, fostering collaboration with industry and government, and supporting the commercialisation of research outcomes.
6. Participating in the enhancement of capacity building of Deakin researchers and research teams to effectively engage with industry and government and plan for the commercialisation of their research outcomes.
7. Contributing to the preparation, negotiation and execution of commercial research agreements within the context of the research activities and appropriate due diligence of research clients.
8. Actively engaging and enabling collaboration across teams and with a diverse range of stakeholders to negotiate inclusive and accessible solutions and achieve strategic goals.
9. Contributing to the establishment of systems and procedures to guide work and tracking progress and striving for excellence and continually evaluate progress and effectively overcome barriers to achieve outcomes.
10. Using accepted theory and practices to develop and deploy continuous improvement actions to ensure the implementation of continuous improvement strategies in own work area.
11. Developing a network of useful contacts within Deakin and integrating perspectives held within different areas of the University and putting plans in place to build collaboration and develop common goals.
12. Using the understanding of the client context to anticipate needs, tailor services, improve service offering and ensure a high-quality outcome by addressing client feedback and setting service standards.
13. Interpreting needs and offering pragmatic, inclusive and sustainable solutions based on research and in alignment with University context, policies and practices.
14. Using an understanding of the target audience to structure and shape communication to meet their information needs or concerns and anticipate and prepare for the audience’s reactions and questions
To be successful, you’ll have:
15. Postgraduate qualifications or an equivalent combination of qualifications and demonstrable industry and higher education experience in one or more of the research and development verticals: The Arts, Security, Emerging and Enabling Technologies, Education, Social Science and Law
16. Demonstrated experience in building relationships and represent internal and external partners and customers across industry, government and university sectors
17. Proven understanding of university research culture and the pathways for the commercialisation of research
18. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively to achieve quality customer service for research clients and researcher groups
19. Good understanding of negotiating and managing contractual arrangements, coordinating and costing projects
