We're changing the way Australia generates its energy, are you ready for a change? The Project UGL and CPB Contractors have been awarded the early works contract to support Powerlink's delivery of Copper String 2032. This $5 billion iconic project will initially be approximately 840 kilometres of new transmission line running from just south of Townsville to Mount Isa that will connect Queensland's North-West Minerals Province to the national electricity grid. The project scope includes: • 500 kilovolt (k V) transmission line from just south of Townsville to Hughenden• 330k V transmission line from Hughenden to Cloncurry• 220k V transmission line from Cloncurry to Mount Isa• up to six new substation sites. The Role The Cost Engineer is responsible for ensuring the Projects and its assets are managed efficiently in terms of resources, costs, profitability, and risk. The Cost Engineer oversees estimates, cost controls, the allocation of budgets, reporting of cost deviations, cash flow reporting, cost forecasting and change management. What will a day in this role look like: Develop and maintains detailed Project related cost analysis and estimates, including materials, labour, equipment, and services, ensuring accuracy and alignment with Project budgets. Provides consultation on planning, coordination, and cost control of Projects. Implements and manages cost control systems to monitor Project expenditures against budgets and forecasts, identifying and addressing overruns in a timely manner. Supports the implementation and continuous improvement of cost control strategies in line with team and Project requirements. Maintains project controls systems to ensure data integrity and accurate reporting is provided in a timely manner and available. Works with various functional areas across the authority (including project managers, procurement, commercial, legal and finance teams) to ensure best for Project outcomes are achieved. Prepares and presents detailed cost reports and forecasts to project managers and stakeholders, highlighting variances between actual and budgeted costs. Analyses Project specifications to identify cost-saving opportunities and recommend cost-effective alternatives. Collaborates with procurement teams to negotiate contracts with suppliers and contractors, ensuring favourable terms and adherence to Project budgets. Assesses financial risks associated with Project decisions and proposes mitigation strategies to manage potential cost overruns. Participates in contractor bid reviews, assist in contractor variation, and claims evaluations. Develops and implements effective cost tracking and reporting methodologies. What are we looking for you to bring to the team: Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, construction management (or similar), or relevant trade qualification and demonstrated experience. Minimum 8-10 years' experience working in a similar role within the construction, mining, or resource industry. Ability to establish effective working relationships at all levels with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Strong understanding of cost control processes, capital estimates, and project forecasting. Knowledge and application of cost control principles. Experience in reviewing cost forecasts considering expenditure to date and construction programs. Excellent analytical, organisational, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Share Point. Proficient in the use of SAP, CMS, or other ERMS is highly regarded.
