Summary of Role:
As the Engineering & Grid Manager, APAC, you will provide regional Engineering personnel with management and oversight of project engineering works during design, pre-construction, construction, commissioning, energization, and operations of Mainstream’s renewable energy projects in the APAC region. You will work closely with your manager (based in Dublin, Ireland) to leverage the support of the global Engineering team, engaging in two-way communication and exchange of experience, lessons learned, best-practices, procedures and methods, tools and templates.
What you will do?
1. Manage the APAC team of multi-disciplinary Engineers and technical personnel (Civil, Electrical, Grid and Geographical Information Services or ‘GIS’) in several APAC countries.
2. Communicate regularly with your manager based in Dublin (Ireland) providing two-way communication and exchange of information, experience, lessons learned, best-practices, procedures and methods, tools, software, and templates.
3. Manage team performance, team and direct-report goals setting and activity prioritization, team resource planning, team expansion, team member retention, budgeting, and associated works for your direct reports.
4. Undertake infrequent international and national travel for the purpose of managing team members, inducting new personnel into the team, fostering relationships with team members, sharing experience and formulating plans through formal workshops and meetings, visiting projects and otherwise in agreement with your manager.
5. Consultation with the regional GM, Development and Country Managers to ensure correct work prioritization and alignment with company goals and Engineering budget and project support work methodology.
6. Sharing, review, and provision of inputs into key Engineering templates, including the Employer’ Requirements, conceptual design templates, internal procedures and guidelines, engineering study scope of works, requests for proposals, and other related documentation.
7. Identify and provide development, pre-construction, construction, commissioning, energization, taking-over, and operational stage technical engineering support to projects according to agreed priority project plans, resource plans, and Engineering activity procedures.
8. Ensure adequate Engineering support and cooperation with external parties in relation to pre-construction activities, including banks, independent engineers, lenders engineers, insurers, contractors, government bodies, system operators & utilities, etc.
9. Accountable for regional Engineering team coordination of front-end engineering works, including reports, drawings, and investigations (e.g., grid capacity studies, feasibility studies, load flow and short-circuit studies, energy loss calculations, reticulation network designs, substation layouts, natural risk assessments, geotechnical surveys, topographical surveys, etc.) by Engineering personnel and/or third-party consultants, and the review thereof for the integration into due diligence reports, Employer’s Requirements, and other deliverables.
10. Accountable for fostering good working relationships with the regional grid utilities directly or through relevant team members.
11. Accountable for fostering good working relationships and management of key consultants for repeatable works in each region directly or through relevant team members.
12. Encourage ongoing participation by- and membership of- relevant team members in national regulatory and renewable energy forums, committees, industry bodies, or groups.
13. Accountable for suitable engineering support during project due diligence of new/existing project opportunities for acquisition, divestment, and potential joint venture partnerships and financial close processes, including engineering consultant appointment and management where required and review of consultant deliverables.
14. Lead and encourage regional team knowledge sharing in groups and global technical committees focusing on sharing of expertise, recommendations, standards, best-practices, and lessons learned with global Engineering team members.
15. Actively review and provide Engineering technical inputs into Mainstream’s global procedures.
16. Ensure adequate knowledge of- and access to- national standards, Grid Codes, and compliance criteria among Engineering team members supporting individual projects.
17. Support compliance with Mainstream’s international standards certifications and management systems as relevant to the Engineering team through development of- and compliance with- Engineering guidelines, models, templates, and processes.
18. Ensure adequate engineering quality auditing during project construction and operations as necessary, including management of the detailed design review process with multiple teams for improved quality assurance.
19. Ensure engineering activities are carried out to the highest quality standards and in accordance with the relevant health and safety standards.
20. Undertake ongoing market study and provide awareness of- and liaise with suppliers on- relevant renewable energy engineering activities, regulatory issues, and changes to technologies in communication with the Supply Chain and Procurement teams for the APAC market.
21. Accountable for the technical assessment of contractor proposed suppliers and their products for critical equipment during project pre-construction and construction phase, in communication with the Procurement team.
22. Undertake research and training in engineering best practices, international and national engineering standards, drive project innovation and cost reduction opportunities, and evaluate new engineering concepts and technologies together with various teams.
23. Attend ongoing local and international training seminars, conferences, workshops, and others for both technical and company policy and standards training, and share experience and knowledge gained from these events with fellow team members in meetings/presentations and in the updating of relevant templates, guidelines, and procedures. Attend and undertake Continuous Personal Development (CPD) training, reading and tasks for ongoing professional development as part of your membership with your professional Engineering body and Mainstream’s employee CPD policy.
What we require?
1. A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (BEng, BSc, BSE).
2. A minimum of 10 years’ experience in energy generation engineering and technology on a multi-disciplinary basis.
3. A minimum of 5 years’ management of engineering and/or technical personnel.
4. Valid registration (or confirmation of suitability to apply for registration with the Professional Engineers Board (PEB) of Singapore or similar accredited professional engineering body.
5. Technical understanding and experience of Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) and/or solar PV projects and technologies.
6. Experience with national and international engineering codes and standards compliance.
7. Flexibility in terms of working arrangements, including national and international travel as part of the role.
8. An unencumbered passport without travel restrictions (excluding normal travel Visa requirements).
9. Valid driver’s license for infrequent national and international travel.
10. Good experience with adapting to changing work priorities and meeting deadlines.
11. Good experience with Microsoft Windows, SharePoint Online, and Office.
12. Have excellent communication and people skills.
13. Fluent in the English language (written and spoken).
14. Excellent report writing skills.
15. Good experience of working independently and collaboratively.
16. Good initiative and ability to proactively identify required tasks and complete them in good time, with excellent problem-solving skills.
17. Excellent attention to detail, with good organizational, task prioritisation, and time management skills.
Preference will be given to Candidates that have the following Experience:
1. Master’s Degree in renewable energy, environmental sciences, or other relevant studies.
2. Master in Business Administration (MBA).
3. Experience working for an EPC contractor or consultant in the renewable industry.
4. Experience of wind, solar, and/or substation civil and electrical design and construction.
5. Experience of underground cabling and overhead transmission line design and construction.
6. Experience in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) project work.
7. Knowledge of grid utility connections, SCADA systems, control and protection systems, and Operational Technology (OT).
8. Knowledge of applicable national transmission and distribution Grid Codes.
9. Experience of geophysical risk analysis or complex terrain design and construction.
10. Experience in tender/bid evaluation.
11. Experience of providing inputs into contract documents and programmes for EPC contracts, WTG supply agreements, and consultant engineering agreements.
12. Experience of conducting technical and commercial negotiations with contractors.
13. Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft Visio, PLSCAD, PSSE, PowerFactory, QGIS/ArcGIS, Google Earth Pro, and other similar software.
