About our team National Operations | Customs Compliance Enforce & Target | N/A | Illicit Tobacco Taskforce The Illicit Tobacco Taskforce (ITTF) was established on 1 July 2018. The Taskforce is responsible for the protection of Commonwealth revenue through proactive investigation, targeting, and disruption of serious actors and organised crime syndicates involved in the illicit tobacco trade, including disrupting their global supply chains. We are an Australian Border Force (ABF)-led Taskforce that draws on the expertise and advanced capabilities of the ABF, the Department of Home Affairs, the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC), the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC), and the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP). Specifically, the ABF ITTF includes a Strategy, Coordination, Research and Reporting Team as well as Operational Jurisdictional Strike Teams of ABF Investigators targeting the importation of illicit tobacco by identified Priority Illicit Tobacco Networks. Current footprint of ABF ITTF Team includes officers based in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Our ideal candidate The ITTF is looking for confident investigators who thrive in a complex, fast-paced operational environment and possess the ability to learn quickly on the job to successfully investigate, disrupt, and prosecute Serious Organised Crime (SOC) networks involved in the illicit tobacco trade. Our ideal candidates should demonstrate a strong work ethic, corporate competency, high levels of emotional intelligence, with the capacity to take proactive action. Candidates should possess well-developed written and oral communication skills and the ability to work under limited direction as part of a small high-performing team and be willing to support other work streams within the Section and Branch as required. It is highly desirable that candidates have previous experience in criminal investigations including the collection and management of evidence, preparation of briefs of evidence, and giving oral evidence before a court. Candidates will be required to articulate their understanding of threat management, government investigations methodologies, and their experience working in fast-paced, dynamic, and complex operational environments. It is highly desirable that candidates hold a Certificate IV in Government Investigations (or equivalent qualification) and other recognised or relevant qualification/s for undertaking investigations under Australian standards supported by evidence. Experience in operational planning is also highly desirable. Officers will be asked to obtain and maintain a Use of Force qualification. Successful candidates must meet the Border Force Officer essential requirements including: Maintaining relevant medical, fitness, and psychometric standards Making the oath or affirmation as a Border Force Officer to conduct themselves with integrity and honesty and uphold the significant trust placed in them in the conduct of their duties Actively participate in career management (postings and deployments). Duties and responsibilities The investigator role is responsible for the following: Conduct complex investigations of suspected offences, collecting and analysing information to prepare briefs of evidence when appropriate and instructing the Australian Government Solicitor or liaising with the office of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) as appropriate during the investigation and throughout the prosecution process Cases allocated to this position for investigation will range in complexity and may also include supervising junior investigators and managing cases allocated to them Work closely with Home Affairs portfolio agencies and other Commonwealth and/or State law enforcement bodies in a multi-agency operational environment. Gather evidence, intelligence as required and be capable of providing evidence in court on matters arising out of operations in criminal and civil jurisdictions Design, develop, implement, and/or coordinate operational responses to border security risks across the border continuum - offshore, onshore, and at the border Liaise with and support investigations and operations conducted by domestic and international partners by ensuring the optimal utilisation of ABF capabilities and powers Ability to travel domestically.
