About the opportunity
DPIRD is seeking to establish a pool of applicants who are suitably experienced and qualified in litigation and dispute management to fill SCL4 and SCL5 Legal Officer roles.
We have one (1) SCL4 fixed term position and one (1) SCL5 permanent position for immediate filling.
This pool will be valid for a period of twelve (12) months following finalisation of the process and may be used to fill other same/similar permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies with the possibility of extension or permanency, based at DPIRD’s metropolitan office locations. Please note, being appointed to the pool does not guarantee you a placement to a position.
What will your typical day look like?
You will work closely with the Director to deliver a comprehensive legal and legislative consultancy service to the Department’s executive and the Minister.
You will provide general legal advice services, including statutory interpretation relevant to DPIRD’s legislative, operational, and strategic portfolio, and take a leadership role in supporting and evolving best practice management systems and protocols as well as driving proactive legal solutions.
You will also provide specialist legal input in litigation and dispute management. Specifically:
1. Providing advice on criminal matters, including on officers’ powers, investigation strategies, prospects of conviction and wording of charges.
2. Undertaking prosecutions and civil litigation in matters of varying complexity on behalf of the Department.
3. Representing or supporting the representation of the Director General and the Minister in the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT), Corruption and Crime Commission and various courts, on a range of litigation matters including appeal proceedings.
4. Providing advice to departmental officers on a variety of other disputes, litigation, insurance claims and industrial relations matters of varying complexity.
As an SCL5 Principal Legal Officer you will be responsible for leading the Department’s litigation and dispute team (currently with 4 direct reports) and providing strategic direction, supervision and mentoring to Legal Officers in that team.
As an SCL4 Senior Legal Officer you will take a leadership role in supervising and mentoring more junior Legal Officers in the team.
