The public sector practice is a national priority of Hall & Wilcox and is rapidly growing.You will sit within our national Dispute Resolution section, which is comprised of over 95 team members nationally. We provide the full range of legal services to our public sector clients, bringing both deep expertise and a fresh perspective to their matters. We partner with clients at all levels of government, with key clients including local councils, the Victorian State Government and other large corporate entities. We also provide a specialist quarterly publication, Public Law, for our public sector clients.This role offers varied and complex work in the area of public sector litigation, in particular land acquisition matters. It will suit a litigation lawyer with an interest in real property, statutory interpretation and citizens' rights, that is seeking regular exposure to Court processes, highly regarded counsel, direct client contact, and the opportunity to work within a market leading practice in this space.Key responsibilitiesThe successful candidate will work directly with the lead partner in our public sector industry group, as well as senior practitioners in the public sector disputes practice to:be an integral part of the team with responsibility for running matters directly with counsel and the client through to trial (in the Supreme Court of Victoria, Court of Appeal and VCAT);act on behalf of, and advise, all levels of government on a diverse range of administrative law and commercial dispute matters;draft court documents, advices, briefs to counsel and correspondence;provide specialist legal advice on complex legal issues, including statutory interpretation, administrative law, compulsory acquisition and commercial disputes.Skills and experienceWe would like to hear from candidates with the following skills and experience:a minimum of 5 years of post-admission experience;ideally you will have a background in public law disputes, with a strong academic record;we will also consider candidates who have experience in general commercial litigation or property or construction law, with a passion for public law and a strong desire to work on public sector matters, in particular compulsory land acquisition;excellent legal drafting and analytical skills, with outstanding attention to detail;strong verbal and written communication skills;the willingness to supervise and mentor junior members of the team as appropriate;the ability to confidently run matters through the dispute resolution process, as well as the ability to handle a busy workload with competing timelines.About usHall & Wilcox is a leading independent Australian law firm.
