Job Information
About us
McColl’s Transport was established in 1952 as a family-run operation with a single vehicle transporting milk around Geelong, Victoria.
The company now operates more than 600 tankers in the logistics of bulk dairy, food and consumer and industrial chemicals.
The company is in an exciting stage of improvement and development and has a long-established graduate program to bring early-career talent into the organization. Several of the leading managers in the Company joined through the graduate program.
The Program
The 2-year program develops graduates to give them foundational skills which are useful throughout their business careers as well as exposure to the day-to-day business. The structured rotations will see graduates learning about different parts of the Company, as well as designing, recommending and implementing improvement projects.
There are two core elements of the program:
1.0 Operational Divisions – Rotations
As part of our program, graduates rotate through each of our four operating units:
1. Fleet, which manages vehicles and equipment;
2. Farm Pickup, which manages the specialised task of milk collection from dairy farms;
3. Bulk Food, which transports ingredients for our industrial food customers; and
4. Bulk Chemicals, which services our customers in manufacturing industries.
Each graduate has an experienced mentor in their current division to guide their learning and experience. Part of the rotation is some on-the-ground work experience in the division, spending time with drivers, customers, mechanics or suppliers.
2.0 Strategy and Analytics
The second dimension of the program is with the Strategy and Analytics team.
This part of the graduates’ journey concentrates on learning and practicing more general business skills:
5. Office and professional etiquette/norms
6. Excel, Powerpoint and report writing skills
7. Process mapping
8. Data preparation and analysis
9. Data handling tools
10. Presentation skills
11. Career planning
12. Client entertainment
13. Introduction to project management
14. Ad-hoc project work for other support divisions (HR, Safety, Finance, IT etc.)
This element of the program helps graduates to be confident in professional environments, interacting with a wide group of people around the organisation. It also helps graduates to learn to process unstructured information, draw meaning from it and present their findings in a structured, persuasive way.
Our managers have been through similar programs at Macquarie Bank, Caterpillar, McColl’s, McKinsey, Ford and Nestle – so we are confident that we can offer a comprehensive post-university experience. Graduates of this program should have a well-rounded experience in the Company and have learned good habits which prepare them for the next stage of their careers.
