The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healing Foundation is a national organisation that elevates the voices and lived experience of Stolen Generations survivors, their families, and their communities.
We work closely with survivors and communities to create environments for survivors to tell their stories and drive their healing.
We are committed to the recognition of the Bringing Them Home Report and the realisation of the rights outlined in the report for Stolen Generations and descendants.
We are governed by a Board of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Directors, guided by a Stolen Generations Reference Group, a Youth Reference Group and are led by an Indigenous Executive.
With our work informed by the Stolen Generations sector – organisations that provide direct support to Stolen Generations survivors in communities across the country.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Director of Communications to build and implement a strategic approach to communications externally and across all the different areas of the organisation.
This role is critical in shaping the organisation's narrative, enhancing engagement, and ensuring culturally appropriate messaging that amplifies the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and Stolen Generations organisations.
This is a hybrid role based in either our Brisbane or Canberra office, requiring three days in the office and two days working from home per week.
Responsibilities
• Work closely with the Executive to develop a strategic approach to communications, including project and campaign-based strategies
• Lead and support the communications team, streamlining processes and workflows.
• Lead events and conference coordination and communications.
• Drive donor communications and funding strategies ensuring compliance.
• Oversee social media, website build, maintenance and content, eDMs.
• Oversee key messaging, content management and collateral design.
• Manage the Communications budget, external consultants and suppliers as required.
• Ensure communications align with Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) principles and uphold cultural integrity.
• Oversee media engagement, speech writing and presentations.
• Prepare reports for the CEO and other relevant stakeholders to meet compliance requirements and enable the organisation to measure outcomes.
Skills and attributes:
• Proven leadership in strategic communications and stakeholder engagement in a not-for-profit organisation, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations.
• Deep understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and experience working with Indigenous communities.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to engage and inspire a diverse team.
• Experience in business process development and workflow management.
• Strong financial and business management skills, including budgeting and procurement.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences.
• Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Willingness to travel and engage with regional and remote communities.
• Qualification in Communications, Marketing, Media or Events desirable.
