Independent Third Person (ITP) Volunteer
An Independent Third Person (ITP) is a volunteer trained by and registered with the Office of the Public Advocate. They play a vital role in ensuring individuals with cognitive disabilities or mental illnesses are not disadvantaged during interactions with police.
Key Responsibilities
* Facilitate effective communication between the individual and law enforcement officials.
* Assist the person in understanding their rights and entitlements.
* Provide emotional support throughout the process.
Requirements
* Excellent communication skills are essential for success in this role.
* A vehicle for transportation is necessary, as volunteers may be required to travel to various locations.
* Commitment to a minimum 2-year term is required, making this role less suitable for students seeking short-term experience.
* Volunteers must complete a 2-day induction program and participate in a practice exercise and mock interview.
