Selection Criteria
SC 1. High level knowledge of nutrition and healthy eating and an understanding of the government guidelines and policies related to the operation of school canteens.
SC 2. A demonstrated commitment to customer service including the ability to relate positively to a wide range of people.
SC 3. Good organisational and management skills as they relate to ordering, stock control, money handling, budgets, rosters and the daily running of the canteen.
SC 4. The ability to develop a creative, nutritious and profitable menu that promotes healthy choices.
Role
In 2025 the Sunbury West Primary School canteen will service a student population of approximately 230.
The canteen operates 2 days per week and has lunch orders and counter sales lunch time only. This position is for 8 hours per week and worked between Wednesday 8.30am - 12.30pm and Thursday 8.30am - 12.30pm during the school terms.
The canteen manager is expected to operate the canteen following the guidelines set out by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development for Healthy School Food Services and the school's canteen policy. The canteen is a member of the Australian School Canteens Association.
The Canteen Manager is required to hold:
a current Victorian Driver's Licence and have a car,
an Employee Working with Children Card,
a Statement of Attainment that shows the required food safety competencies from a Registered Training Organisation,
a current Police Check.
Additionally, any qualifications in commercial cooking or experience in high volume food preparation would be looked upon favourably.
Responsibilities
Implementing and maintaining a varied and healthy menu and initiating new healthy food items on a regular basis as per the National Healthy School Canteens Guidelines.
Implementing and ensuring operational procedures comply with relevant legal requirements regarding food safety and occupational health and safety standards.
Efficient stock management, including purchasing, accounting and financial procedures.
Managing the financial operations of the canteen ensuring that it is viable.
Coordinating and supervising the canteen’s volunteers, including rostering.
Maintaining a pleasant working environment for all volunteers, ensuring high standards of customer service and excellent communication with all parties.
Promoting and marketing the canteen and the healthy foods it sells.
Providing catering for school functions / activities as required.
Organising Special Meal Deal days - approximately once per term.
Ensuring the physical security of the canteen area, including cash, keys, locking up, switching off appliances and restricting access to unauthorised personnel.
Utilising computer applications to assist with operational and management functions.
Attending regular Canteen committee meetings.
Participating in a process of annual review and professional learning as it relates to the role.
