Job Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic National Transport Manager to join Flexigrid's Leadership team and lead our national fuel distribution operations.
As the National Transport Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing physical transport operations across the UK, ensuring the safe and efficient distribution of fuel products to our customers through our national infrastructure and delivery teams.
You will manage a team of Regional Transport Managers and the UK Transport Management team, developing logistics strategies that deliver outstanding service operations to Greenergy customers and Flexigrid's own clients, maintaining our Earned Recognition Status and Flexigrid's position as an employer of choice in the sector.
Through the team you will be expected to develop the existing strong culture of positive employee relations, identify and deliver opportunities to improve operational processes, and maintain compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
Key ResponsibilitiesLogistics Strategy and Planning:
Develop and execute strategies to ensure timely, cost-effective delivery of fuel from over 20 operating locations across the UK using circa 200 vehicles and 640 drivers.
Create and implement short-term and long-term logistics plans to optimise fuel supply chain operations.
Collaborate with senior leadership to align logistics strategies with overall business goals and market demands.Operational Management:
Oversee day-to-day logistics operations, including transportation and distribution of fuel products to customers.
Manage and optimise the utilization of transportation fleets and distribution depots.
Manage and review all depot and management KPI's.
Agility to respond to the ever-changing operational environment and to support the energy transition and new growth opportunities e.g.
Hydrogen, Aviation, Renewable Fuels.
Manage the cost and efficiency of the resources under your control (Sites, vehicles, people).Team Leadership and Development:
Lead and mentor the Regional Managers and Transport Manager team.
Ensure continuous training and development for staff to keep up with safety regulations, technology, and best practices.
Foster a collaborative environment with cross-functional teams, including fleet, finance, commercial, resourcing, HR, IT and planning.
Lead a positive performance management culture through accountability with the Regional and Transport Manager community.
Accountability and leadership of the National Driver Training team to ensure full compliance of all Drivers.Safety and Compliance:
Day to day management of Compliance & Quality Process Manager.
Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards specific to fuel distribution (e.g O Licence, FORS, CPC etc).
Implement and monitor safety protocols, vehicle inspections, and emergency procedures across all transport depots.
Develop risk management strategies to minimise disruptions, accidents, and environmental hazards.
Maintain a close working relationship with our SHEQ team to ensure operations is integrated into our safety objectives and co-ordinated to identify hazards and drive continuous improvement.Budgeting and Cost Control:
Oversee the transport depot budget and manage expenditures to ensure cost efficiency across all depots.
Identify opportunities for cost reduction without compromising service quality, safety, or compliance.
Prepare and present regular reports on logistics performance, including cost savings, operational improvements, and risk management.Technology and Innovation:
Leverage technology solutions (e.g., GPS tracking, fleet management software, route optimisation tools) to enhance logistics operations.
Stay informed about industry trends, new logistics technologies, and practices that can improve the efficiency and safety of operations.Vendor and Supplier Management:
Establish and manage relationships with third-party logistics providers, transportation contractors, and equipment suppliers.
Negotiate contracts, service level agreements (SLAs), and ensure high service standards are maintained.Industrial Relations Management:
Develop a strong relationship with the Trade Unions to ensure a proactive and collaborative approach to IR issues.
Work with the Head of HR and Head of IR on solutions to Driver related challenges. Qualifications, Skills, and ExpertiseQualifications: Experience in logistics management would be ideal, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
Transport CPC.Strong knowledge of transport operations in a customer service environment.
Knowledge of fuel distribution processes, safety standards, and regulations would be helpful but is not compulsory.Proven experience in leading and managing large, multi-site teams, budgets, and multi-location logistics operations.Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.Ability to analyse data, solve complex problems, and make strategic decisions.Valid driver's license and the ability to obtain necessary certifications.Must hold International CPC.Preferred Skills: Experience in fuel or energy sector logistics is preferred, however not essential.Familiarity with advanced logistics technologies.Knowledge of sustainability practices in logistics, including reducing carbon emissions and optimising fuel consumption.Expectations: Full-time position with national travel required.Willingness to work outside of regular business hours, as needed, to oversee critical situations.Office-based (Tamworth) with on-site visits to transport depots, terminals and Head Office locations in London and Manchester.
