Job Description
An excellent opportunity is available for a Senior Business Development Manager to join the Partnerships and Ventures team at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.
About the Position
The Senior Business Development Manager will lead cancer projects and key contracts for labs in Structural Biology, Genetics and Ubiquitin signalling assisting the Partnerships and Ventures team in commercialisation of research, business development, advocacy and technology transfer activities. The Manager supports or independently manages business development projects including venture creation, which ultimately enable effective capture and translation of Institute intellectual property, the education of institute staff in collaboration, translation and technology transfer, the negotiation of deals, and management of external alliances with global industry partners and investors and of WEHI spinout companies. Areas of activity include opportunity identification, intellectual property capture, marketing and communication, legal agreements, strategic plans, and training.
Selection Criteria
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
* A PhD degree in a science-based discipline relevant to the pharmaceutical or biotechnology areas with significant laboratory research experience and significant commercial experience
* Extensive experience in business development in an academic or commercial environment
* A strong understanding of issues involved with technology transfer and knowledge transfer
* Excellent knowledge of key therapeutic areas in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry and a strong specialised knowledge in at least one therapeutic area, in term of both market value drivers / unmet medical needs and benchmark licensing or acquisition deals
* A well-developed understanding of the drivers of research, biomedical industry, and healthcare dynamics
* Good understanding of company governance
* Cross-cultural understanding and proven skills in achieving results in bridging sectors, disciplines, corporate and cultural origins
Desirable Knowledge and Skills:
* A PhD in Cancer/Structural Biology/Genetics/Ubiquitin is highly desired
* A background (either through studies or research experience) in Cancer/Structural Biology/Genetics/Ubiquitin is highly desired
* Knowledge of and experience in the Cancer/Structural Biology/Genetics/Ubiquitin therapeutic areas, including key trends and local / global players
Personal Qualities:
* Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and manage relationships with a broad range of academic and clinical stakeholders, together with the aptitude to interact with both technical and non-technical groups
* A successful track record in negotiating licensing and commercialisation agreements with commercial, academic and government partners
* Strong presentation and public speaking skills
* A demonstrated ability to develop strong networks
* A proven track record of high level analytical, conceptual, problem solving and research project management skills
* Ability to work as an effective member of a small team and provide supervision and support where required
* A demonstrated ability to deliver high quality outputs to agreed deadlines
* High integrity and ability to manage confidential information

Terms of Appointment
This position is ongoing in a full time capacity. Salary is Professional Services Employee (PSE) Level 9 ($133,763 - $144,791).Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
