Who are we looking for?
We're working on an exciting career assignment with a top financial services company and we're seeking a Payments lawyer to join us and kick-start their LOD career with this assignment.
The Payments business is integral to the functionality of payments across multiple areas of the client, including integration with digital channels and wallets, and interaction with sources of funds such as transaction accounts, credit facilities, and receivables offerings. This position operates in a legal practice area that bridges consumer-facing laws and B2B contracting arrangements.
This is a full-time assignment which initially runs for 6 months.
Please note this role can be based in either our client’s Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth office.
Key Responsibilities:
As a legal secondee, you will have the opportunity to work alongside a collaborative team and engage with a wide range of legal matters in the payments sector. Your daily responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
* Advising on new product and service enhancements, including 'as-a-service' offerings via APIs, with support on areas that are new to you.
* Managing contractual negotiations with referrers, intermediaries, brokers, service providers, agents, and other entities within the payments ecosystem.
* Providing general banking and financial services advice, including involvement in project or product migration work.
* Reviewing and advising on terms for both standard form and bespoke customer contracts, especially for large institutional clients.
* Addressing regulatory matters such as the regulatory classification of new products, handling incidents, providing remediation support, and managing regulatory change (including industry or scheme mandates).
To join us, you will:
* A strong background in banking, payments, or financial services law.
* Have at least 7 years PQE ideally gained from top or mid-tier law firms or in-house (with strong legal training)
* Excellent interpersonal and negotiating skills are essential, along with highly developed technical skills, judgment, and the ability to navigate complex legal issues.
* Strong oral and written communication skills are required, as well as the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and maintain a high level of organisation.
* Must have private practice experience, enabling them to deliver against the responsibilities of the role.
* Experience in financial services, payments, or contracting arrangements in a financial services context is preferred.
* Be client centric - commercially minded, adaptable and able to hit the ground running
* Enjoy partnering with businesses and managing stakeholder relationships
