The ACT Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions was established by the Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1990 (the Act) to institute, conduct and supervise prosecutions and related proceedings. It comprises the Director of Public Prosecutions (the Director), an independent statutory officer appointed by the ACT’s Executive branch of Government, and staff employed under the Public Sector Management Act 1994, to assist the Director. The principal role of the ODPP is to determine whether or not to continue or initiate the prosecution of matters referred by the Australian Federal Police and Australian Capital Territory regulatory agencies and, if it decides to do so, to fairly conduct the prosecutions and any appeals or related proceedings which may arise. This position is advocacy based. The role will require the successful applicant to routinely prepare for and attend court, sometimes on short notice. Successful candidates will also act as ‘second in charge’ within a small team of prosecutors, holding lower-level management responsibilities. The successful candidates will engage with matters of varying complexities, and prepare and appear in more complex summary hearings, sentences and bail applications in the Magistrates Court. The successful applicants will appear in bail, sentence, pre-trial applications and single judge appellate work in the Supreme Court and will instruct or junior in Supreme Court trials or superior appellate courts. The position will appeal to a person who has proven advocacy experience and a desire to appear in court. Someone who can effectively and proficiently communicate with the court, complainants, witnesses, professional colleagues and the police. Good attention to detail, legal analytical skills and time management is essential. This position will expose you to graphic and confronting material. This position requires the successful candidate/s to work within the office five (5) days per week.
