This role offers the opportunity to lead improvements in Indigenous heritage within the Communities and Social Performance (CSP) Area of Expertise (AoE) and wider business, as well as providing strategic oversight in support of strong cultural heritage and social outcomes across Rio Tinto. With an understanding of the impact mining activities have on Indigenous and land-connected people and the potential outcomes our activities can cause, you will bring a deep understanding of the principles and application of cultural heritage management in the business, focusing on the relevant cultural and legal contexts. Reporting to the Global Chief Advisor Indigenous Relations, as part of a global team, you will: Provide expertise to guide and continue to improve Rio Tinto’s cultural heritage management system and processes Drive enhanced Indigenous heritage management outcomes through targeted support to assets and product groups Support the development of world class competencies and capabilities in cultural heritage management in Australia and abroad Develop and advise on strategic approaches to strengthen the considerations and requirements of Indigenous groups related to Indigenous heritage and heritage management practices When requested, provide support and technical expertise on cultural heritage matters (including artefact storage, fieldwork and relationship management) The CSP AoE supports the achievement of Rio Tinto’s business’ objectives, by building strong partnerships based on relationships of mutual trust and respect. What you’ll bring To be successful in this role, you will have the following: A commitment to the safety and wellbeing of yourself and your team, and to our values of care, courage and curiosity Tertiary qualifications in a heritage management, social science or related discipline Effective influencing skills when engaging with senior leaders internally and externally and ability to work in a networked organisation Demonstrated expertise in cultural heritage and Communities and Social Performance, including diverse and complex cultural and community challenges Demonstrated experience in crafting and delivering strategies, and ability to drive technical excellence in heritage management and CSP at regional and asset teams Strong technical expertise in cultural heritage management (CHM) systems Demonstrated experience in providing technical advice in CHM, risk management and mitigation to enable development of ongoing operations Experience with actively engaging Indigenous peoples’ and other external partners to develop and drive plans on sustainable CHM and protection Other skills In-depth Cultural Competency Lived experience working with or living in or working with Indigenous communities Ability to cultivate positive relationships within and across business areas through effective communication and provide constructive feedback to direct reports/peers on a regular basis Lead, coach, mentor and support employees and direct reports to understand and deliver on the plan, instilling a no-nonsense, high-performance culture with an ability to influence Project management and consultant management experience Where you’ll be working Our CSP AoE is Rio Tinto’s Technical CSP function. It provides support to the business to build respectful and trusted relationships with host communities that deliver sustainable improvements in social and economic outcomes. The AoE works with CSP practitioners and leaders across the business to build capability, support social performance delivery, monitor, and respond to emerging trends, and provide assurance and risk management. The AoE also maintains Rio Tinto’s management systems, CSP standards and reporting process.
