Opal is an industry-leading packaging business, with sites across Australia and New Zealand. We have an exciting opportunity to join the Opal team at our site in Thomastown. Reporting to the Engineering and Maintenance Manager, we are currently looking for 3 Assistant Managers (one for each shift: Day shift is 7am – 3.30pm, Afternoon shift is 3pm – 11.30pm, and Night shift is 11pm – 7am). The Assistant Manager works closely with other departments including maintenance, logistics, planning, quality, engineering, and technical to ensure adequate support is available to achieve the Operational goals. The key focus of this role will be to: Manage teams of between approximately 15 to 30 people (varies depending on which shift is being managed). Support adherence to budgets in relation to productivity, labour recovery, waste, and overtime. Lead open, direct, and respectful communication with the team to achieve best performance. Identify constraints within production and, in consultation with maintenance, engineering, quality, and technical, develop, implement, and standardise corrective actions. Clearly and accurately understand the manufacturing changes required and potential opportunities for optimization to drive continuous improvement. Ensure all employees are aware of department-specific safety issues and comply with Opal policies and procedures. Ensure quality checks have been completed, review the effectiveness of the quality system, and implement improvements. For this role, we would ideally like you to have: Experience in managing high-speed production lines. A proven record of developing and leading effective teams in a production environment. The ability to demonstrate proven knowledge, skills, and abilities to analyse the business context, develop an approach to address the situation, and execute change that is effective and lasting. Experience in food manufacturing or bag making will be highly considered (but is not required). An engineering degree or technical background will be highly considered (but is not required). Experience in Lean Manufacturing principles will also be highly considered and is expected to grow within the role. This role does require full Australian working rights.
