The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is part of the Australian Department of Defence dedicated to providing science and technology support for Australia’s defence and national security needs. THE ROLE
The DTSG Specialised Coatings & Corrosion Science (SC&CS) group is seeking a specialist to assist in researching and developing advanced colour schemes for Littoral Manoeuvre platforms. These platforms, operating near shorelines and in open ocean environments, require highly durable topcoat systems with optimised performance for military service. Currently, no Australian Paint Approval Scheme (APAS) topcoat specifications exist specifically for these environments.
The DSTG requires expertise to generate APAS specifications for 2 to 5 topcoat colours that meet both visible and infrared signature requirements. This project involves liaising with key stakeholders, including the Littoral Manoeuvre Program, and collaborating with the CSIRO APAS authority to publish the specifications.
The successful candidate will be based on-site at Fishermans Bend, Melbourne, with a planned start date of 2nd January 2025, pending an individual’s security clearance approval. The initial contract will run through December 2025.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Engage with stakeholders, including Navy and Army, to review existing specifications and determine system requirements.
* Develop and produce draft APAS specifications.
* Test prototype coatings against draft specifications and produce a report demonstrating compliance.
* Submit draft specifications to the APAS authority, liaise for reviews, and ensure publication.
* Provide guidance to manufacturers on topcoat requirements and timelines.
* Prepare materials and procedures for the initial application, provide advice, and co-author a report summarising outcomes and lessons learned.
SELECTION CRITERIA
To be considered for this unique opportunity you MUST BE AN AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN and will need to meet the following criteria:
* A degree, honours degree or PhD qualification in the fields of Chemistry, Materials Science, Formulation Science, or similar, and/or qualifications from Surface Coatings Associations with relevant industrial experience.
* 10+ years of experience in the coatings industry
* Strong background in writing and developing specifications
* Experience in qualifying coatings products to specifications and ensuring compliance
* Demonstrated ability to conduct scientific research through the use of scientific databases/literature.
* Demonstrated ability to conduct work with limited guidance and supervision.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills to present scientific results both orally and in written reports.
* Demonstrated ability to comply with Work, Health and Safety policies.
* Be adaptable and flexible to deal with a varying workload.
* This role requires NV1 Clearance or the willingness to Undergo a Security Clearance assessment to obtain NV1.
