Position Summary
The Assistant Transport Manager plays a critical role in overseeing the efficient operation of our concrete agitator fleet, ensuring compliance with company standards, and continuously improving our processes. This position involves managing a fleet of 30 agitators, coordinating with several subcontractors, training new drivers, conducting internal audits, and working closely with the workshop manager to schedule maintenance. The role requires strong leadership, problem-solving skills, and a proactive approach to improving transport operations.
Responsibilities
* Fleet & Driver Management:
o Oversee daily operations of the company’s fleet of 30 concrete agitators and associated subcontractors.
o Ensure all drivers and subcontractors follow company procedures and maintain high service standards.
o Conduct training for new drivers on company processes, delivery procedures, and safety protocols.
o Work with company driver trainers to ensure new drivers are signed off on standards.
o Monitor the performance of current drivers and provide ongoing coaching to ensure adherence to company standards.
o Carry out internal audits on drivers to assess compliance with safety, service, and operational requirements.
o Identify and implement process improvements to enhance fleet efficiency and driver performance.
* Maintenance & Compliance:
o Collaborate with the Workshop Manager to schedule and coordinate vehicle maintenance and repairs.
o Ensure all agitators and subcontractor vehicles comply with safety regulations and company policies.
o Monitor vehicle performance and recommend improvements to reduce downtime and increase efficiency.
o Assist with accurate records of vehicle maintenance, driver performance, and incident reports.
o Assist in implementing and training safety initiatives and compliance programs in accordance with industry regulations and company compliance.
* Process Improvement & Auditing:
o Regularly review company processes to identify areas for operational improvements.
o Conduct internal audits on driver performance, vehicle conditions, and delivery efficiency.
o Develop and implement strategies to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and improve overall fleet performance.
o Work collaboratively with management to refine company policies and procedures.
* Work in a team-oriented environment, fostering collaboration between drivers, driver trainers, workshop staff, and management.
* Assist in managing workplace challenges, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations.
* Actively contribute ideas and solutions to improve transport operations and staff performance.
* Lead by example, promoting a culture of safety, efficiency, and professionalism.
* Allocation & Customer Service:
* Work with the workshop to coordinate the trucks required to start the next day's work and plan future maintenance scheduling.
* Contact customers and look ahead on weekly schedules to ensure smooth flow of planning for the weeks and days ahead.
* Work with our batching plant teams and sales teams to ensure trucks and allocation of work is achievable and send out start times for the following day to all drivers and batching staff.
* Coordinate testing and special mixes with our laboratory manager and technical manager.
* Coordinate stock of additional additives, colour & fibre requirements with our sales and technical team.
Requirements and Qualifications
* Experience: Prior experience is preferred but not necessary in transport management, logistics, or a similar role, ideally within the concrete or construction industry.
* Knowledge: Willing to learn or have an understanding of concrete delivery operations, fleet management, and heavy vehicle compliance.
* Leadership Skills: Ability to train, coach, and manage drivers while fostering a positive team culture.
* Technical Skills: Familiarity with vehicle maintenance scheduling and fleet management systems.
* Problem-Solving: Ability to assess and resolve operational challenges effectively.
* Attention to Detail: Strong focus on compliance, safety, and service quality.
* Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with drivers, customers, and management.
* Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, schedules, and priorities efficiently.
* Safety & Compliance: Knowledge of transport safety regulations and industry best practices.
