Army General Service Officers are allocated to specific roles shortly before graduation from the Royal Military College - Duntroon. The allocation of roles is based on performance during training.
As a General Service Officer in the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME) corps, you will be an integral part of a team of specialists maintaining, modifying and managing the Australian Army’s modern military equipment.
Examples of the roles in which you could be employed include a Workshop Commander within a Signals Unit maintaining a suite of satellite communication systems or an Operations Officer within a Field Workshop planning the maintenance for a Brigade.
You will also be exposed to the full range of general service roles such as a staff officer, logistics planner and instructor positions. Throughout your career, you will be given many development and training opportunities that will enable you to perform in any environment and under all types of conditions.
There are two types of entry for the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Officer; the Royal Military College – Duntroon and Australian Defence Force Academy.
After your initial training at your First Appointment Course at the Royal Military College - Duntroon, followed up by the Logistic Officer Basic Course and the RAEME Officer Basic Course – Ground, you will likely be employed as a Troop Commander within a Workshop. Here you will be able to learn Army’s trades, equipment, maintenance systems and administration. Subsequent postings will likely be in a headquarters element planning operational logistics or maintenance activities.
After completion of an engineering degree at the Australian Defence Force Academy, First Appointment training at the Royal Military College – Duntroon, you will then complete the Logistic Officer Basic Course and the RAEME Officer Basic Course – Ground. Following these courses, you will likely be employed as a troop commander within a Workshop in order to allow you to understand the operating context of Army’s equipment. This will provide you with the grounding to make informed engineering decisions later in your career. Subsequent postings may include headquarters elements as a maintenance or logistic planner, the Land Engineering Agency or the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group.
