About the Role The Advisor Environment & Heritage (Ecologist) is the custodian of environmental support for rail infrastructure projects.
You will manage environmental and heritage risks across all projects and rail construction sites.
With a special focus on ecology, you will: Provide advice to avoid and minimise environmental impacts and effectively manage environmental risks.
Identify appropriate environmental controls and manage the preparation of Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs).
Undertake post-works inspections and verifications on completion of works and clean-up.
Provide practical and technical environmental management advice, including vegetation management and fire prevention.
Prepare and complete environmental investigation reports.
Drive increased environmental awareness among stakeholders.
Liaise with environment and heritage regulators.
Your Ecology Specialisation In addition to the general responsibilities, this role requires your subject matter expertise to: Conduct environmental surveys and assessments focusing on the interrelationships between organisms and their environments.
Provide advice on the conservation of flora and fauna, particularly those protected at state, national, and international levels.
Develop and implement habitat management and restoration projects.
Monitor and manage the impact of rail infrastructure on local ecosystems.
Site Visits & Travel This role involves traveling to sites across regional Victoria, offering a fantastic opportunity to explore our beautiful State!
You'll spend about half your time at our Flinders Street office and the other half out on site, where you will: Provide onsite support to significant asset management works to maintain compliance with environmental and heritage legislation and internal procedures.
Attend site inspections, pre-start meetings, and staff/contractor inductions to verify there is an appropriate level of understanding of environmental controls (legislation, procedures, CEMPs).
Undertake site inspections during works to ensure compliance with environmental controls.
There will be some evenings, weekends, overnight stays, and overtime, with reimbursements for all travel-related meals and accommodation.
A valid Victoria Driver Licence is essential, and a tool of trade vehicle will be provided.
The ability to undertake solo journeys and operate a 4WD vehicle will be an advantage.
Accredited 4WD driver training can be provided.
About You Essential qualifications and experience: Tertiary qualification in a discipline such as Environmental Management, Science, Ecology, or Sustainability.
Demonstrated experience working in an environmental discipline, with a focus on ecology.
Rail or transport sector experience would be ideal; equally, your skills may have developed in construction, utilities, linear reserve management, land care, parks & wildlife, or environmental policymaking within government.
Familiarity with State (Vic) & Commonwealth environment & heritage legislation.
Familiarity with, or specialisation in, Victorian flora & fauna.
You are a capable and decisive professional with a collaborative and consultative approach, able to travel to sites and work autonomously.
You can: Interpret technical environmental data, produce and deliver professional reports and presentations, and present information that is accessible and easy to understand.
Communicate effectively, with strong written and verbal communication skills and the confidence to manage difficult conversations.
Prioritise, plan, and coordinate work using a project management approach.
What We Offer Salary for this 2-year, fixed-term role is in the range Clerk C5 (Base $104,121) to SO 1.3 (Base $127,214), in accordance with the V/Line Rail Operations and Administrative Employees Agreement 2023.
