About This Opportunity
We are seeking a proactive and motivated farm/animal attendant to assist with the day-to-day operations of the Farms Production Animal and Farm Services Units, including animal husbandry, irrigation activities and related record keeping. Reporting to the Small Ruminant Coordinator, you will assist in the operations of the combined farms unit teams on the Gatton campus.
The Farms Animal Production units consist of a Droughtmaster herd, Horse Unit, Sheep flock and Goat herd. The team manages all husbandry and welfare requirements of the animal units including teaching, research, irrigation and fencing projects. These units require staff 5 days a week starting at 7:30am and finishing at 3:30pm; some weekend work and overtime may be required.
Key Responsibilities Will Include
At HEW 1
o Ensure animal facilities, including pens and work areas, are kept safe, clean, hygienic, and secure, and perform basic maintenance.
o Assist with animal handling, including mustering, loading, restraining and feeding and specialized tasks such as hoof trimming and vaccination and drenching.
o Assist with irrigating, fencing and maintaining machinery and equipment.
o Support students and staff during animal examinations, treatments, and welfare monitoring.
o Perform routine animal husbandry tasks, monitoring health, hygiene, and welfare, and report veterinary issues.
o Operate a university vehicle as required for operational duties.
At HEW 3
o Maintain all animal husbandry equipment, fences, and equipment used in irrigation, feeding and pasture production.
o Assist with feeding stock using a tractor with loader bucket or hay forks.
o Attend to the routine animal husbandry tasks including monitoring the health, hygiene, and welfare of the animals and immediate reporting of cases where veterinary attention is required.
o Provide teaching and research support to academic staff and students in practical experience programs, and assist with research projects, including experiment setup and monitoring.
o Assist with other specialised animal husbandry and welfare requirements including vaccination, drenching, hoof trimming, dehorning, tagging etc. and maintain accurate farm records, including animal health and production data.
Other related general farm duties as directed by the Farms Manager, Small Ruminant Coordinator or Senior Farm attendant.

About You

Essential
o Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).

For HEW 1
o Completion of Year 10.
o Queensland open driver’s license (Class C).
o Knowledge of farm operations, including equipment maintenance, fencing, and livestock management (desirable).
o Experience in livestock or farming (desirable).
For HEW 3
o Completion of a Trades Certificate or Certificate III, or
o Completion of Year 12 or a Certificate II with relevant experience, or
o Equivalent experience, education, and training.
o Queensland open driver’s license (Class C).
o Heavy Rigid (HR) license or willingness to obtain within three months (highly regarded).
o Ability to obtain a Blue Card.
o Experience with:
+ Farming equipment, fencing, and irrigation maintenance.
+ Livestock husbandry, breeding, nutrition, health, and behaviour (sheep, goats, horses, cattle).
Desirable (or Willingness To Obtain)
o Competency certificates in Side-by-Side Vehicle and Tractor operation.
o ChemCert Accreditation (Agriculture & Veterinary Chemicals).
o Commercial Operator’s License (ACDC Act).
o Heavy Rigid (HR) License.
Training Will Be Provided For Applicants Needing These Qualifications.
The successful candidate may be required to complete background checks including, right to work in Australia, criminal history and education checks.
