Department of Education Legal Practice Our department has responsibility for some of the largest and most interesting legislative based programs in Australia, involving complex legislation, high value grants and commercial arrangements, and intergovernmental negotiations. Our legal practice has several teams providing legal services to each of the business areas in our department. This setup helps build strong client relationships, offers diverse work and deepens our understanding of the legal and business context. Lawyers are also given the opportunity to move between teams to meet business needs and gain broader experience. About the role We are seeking lawyers with strong legal skills, great interpersonal abilities and a positive attitude. Team placement will consider the candidate’s skills and preferences and the legal practice’s operational needs. We are particularly looking for lawyers for: Corporate and Information Law Team: responsible for handling requests and making decisions under the Freedom of Information Act 1982, providing advice on privacy and data law and advising the corporate areas of the department on a range of legal matters, including government advertising campaigns and employment related legal issues. Higher Education, Research and International Legal Team: responsible for providing legal services to the department’s Higher Education, Research and International Group, including interpretation of portfolio legislation, administrative law, establishment and operation of grants programs, drafting of legislative instruments, and a significant program of legislative development. Eligibility requirements Law degree from an Australian or comparable overseas institution Admission as a legal practitioner in an Australian Court, and Eligibility for a restricted Government practising certificate.
