Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).*
To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:
Engineering Technician Trainee, NS=Grade 8:
1.One year of experience assisting in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, electronics, electronics technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying; and graduation from high school or possession of an equivalent diploma; or
2.18 semester college credit hours in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics; or
3.Graduation from a high school technical education program in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics or electronics.
Note: Upon successful completion of the 52 week traineeship candidates will be automatically advanced to the Senior Engineering Technician, SG-13.
Senior Engineering Technician, Grade 13:
1.Two years of experience assisting in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, electronics, electronics technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying; and graduation from high school or possession of an equivalent diploma; or
2.Associate's degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics.
Substitution: a certificate in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics or electronics may substitute for one year of the experience; or 36 semester college credit hours in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture or landscape design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics or electronics technology may substitute for experience at the rate of 18 semester credit hours equaling one year of experience
If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.

Transitional:
Must be a qualified employee of the New York State of Transportation and have had one year of permanent competitive, non-competitive (including 55b/55c), or labor class service in a position allocated to a Grade 5 or higher.
Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
Duties Description Duties include but are not limited to:
The incumbent will assist in the performance of civil engineering work and provide engineering support to technician and engineering staff. The incumbent will be expected to participate in field work; review of contracts and specifications; preparing and reviewing maps and plans; performing and checking computations; preparing portions of written reports; assisting in the design of highway and bridge projects; conducting complex field and laboratory tests of engineering materials. Tasks may include taking measurements, checking computations, collecting and compiling data, making calculations, performing inspections, and preparing inspection reports on construction projects. Incumbent will be expected to demonstrate proficiency with computer applications in performance of assigned duties. Travel throughout the Region may be required.
