The position manages and monitors the annual farm plan and budget in consultation with senior dairy scientists, senior technical and farm staff and is responsible for the day to day running of the SmartFarm and its resources; including staff rostering, health and safety, herd management, animal health and management of feedstock and pastures. The Ellinbank SmartFarm operates as a commercial dairy business, while also providing resources for research aimed at improving productivity, environmental and economic outcomes for the Australian dairy industry through innovation. Activities undertaken on site include applied soils research, agronomy, animal nutrition, physiology and genomics research, among others.The successful applicant will be a highly motivated individual with exceptional leadership qualities. They will be responsible for overseeing and managing all resources including conservation of homegrown feeds, management of relationships with milk processors and suppliers, equipment testing and maintenance as well as logistical requirements of the research. The incumbent will interact with the lead scientists responsible for the implementation of the Ellinbank SmartFarm and its associated technologies.The successful applicant will work effectively as a member of a team, enjoy flexible working arrangements and undertake a wide variety of work across the AVR Branch.Specialist/Technical Expertise/QualificationsAgricultural diploma or equivalent qualification and/or extensive experience in the management of dairies.Demonstrated high-level experience in best practice dairy operations, including herd production, health and reproduction, pasture production and utilisation, implementation of innovative systems and technologies, and staff management.Well-developed communication skills, including an ability to liaise and negotiate with scientific and technical staff and to present performance against key performance indicators to a range of audiences.Experience in monitoring expenditure against budgets, developing feed budgets, including pasture rotations and supplement requirements, and preparation of operational and capital budgets.Proven ability to build and contribute to a cohesive team with clarity around team and individual goals and accountabilities.Demonstrated ability to collect and maintain accurate data/records, with an effective working knowledge of MS Excel spreadsheets, databases and dairy software packages.Well-developed understanding of WHS procedures and obligations with respect to training and supervision of staff, including casuals, risk assessments, and development of safe operating procedures.This is a fixed term position available for a period of 36 Months.
