The National Library of Australia is one of several agencies within the Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications and the Arts portfolio.
The role of the National Library is defined by the National Library Act 1960 and can be broadly defined as “to ensure that documentary resources of national significance relating to Australia and the Australian people, as well as significant non-Australian library materials, are collected, preserved and made accessible”. Accessibility can be either through the Library itself or through collaborative arrangements with other libraries and information providers.
The National Library is the custodian of a rich collection reflecting the people and culture that shape Australia and Australians. We collect a wide range of physical and digital materials and includes more than 10 million items ranging from books and journals to more than 40,000 paintings, drawings and prints, more than 9,000 metres of manuscripts, 550,000 photographs, hundreds of thousands of maps, more than 50,000 oral history recordings and millions of archived websites.
The National Library is a world-leading and respected custodian of Australia’s published, written, oral, visual and digital heritage. We ensure Australian culture and knowledge is sustained for all Australian people, now and in the future.
Our vision is to connect all Australians with national collections, enriching conversations about who we are and our place in the world.
THE NATIONAL LIBRARY HAS FIVE STRATEGIC PRIORITIES:
1. We recognise and respect the crucial place of First Nations stories in Australia’s arts, culture and history.
2. We collect today what will be important tomorrow for Australia’s increasingly diverse community.
3. We inspire Australians to explore voices, stories and meanings by connecting with communities and connecting communities with their national collections.
4. We collaborate with others to deepen the national impact of cultural collections and inform a seamless future for Australia.
5. We are an innovative organisation with strong foundations and the capability to realise our ambitions and deliver our mandate.
