Role: Laboratory Technician Plant Pathologist
Pay Guide: $37 - $45 per hour
Duration: Until 30th June 2025, with the possibility of extension until June 2026 for the right candidate.
Hours: Full-time or Part-time hours available depending on your availability

Do you have a scientific mind and a desire to work in a laboratory within a Government department in Cairns. This role is will suit someone who would like to study or has recently completed a minimum diploma qualification in Science or Applied Science.

The role requirements will depend on your level of experience and skills. Roles at the higher level are ideally suited to currently studying or recent graduates who can develop their knowledge and skills with an experienced RDE team, or for more experienced staff who can bring their current expertise to share with the team.
Roles on the lower pay stream are ideally suited to candidates who do not hold a formal qualification, but have an interest and passion for a role in a laboratory based environment.
As the Technical Officer / Scientific Assistant, you will provide technical support / operational support for a variety of laboratory-based activities (exact responsibilities will align with respective appointment classification).
Duties of the Technical Officer:
* Assist in the provision of a high level of microbiological service to tropical food industries. This
* includes media preparation, QC and QA practices, routine microbiological examinations, calculations,
* and documentation of results in compliance with the laboratories NATA accreditation for biological
* * Maintain general housekeeping of the laboratory; including cleaning and decontamination, and
* equipment maintenance and calibration.
* Assist in the planning and conducting of laboratory diagnostic testing following standard methods.
* Assist in effective sample management from receival through to culture interpretation and provision of
* analysis reports for clients.
* Maintain records, both hard copy and electronic; including entering analytical data into the Laboratory
* Information Management System (LIMS).
* Assist in the identification of client needs and advice on appropriate services, quoting in accordance
* with the prescribed fee schedule.
Duties of the Scientific Assistant:
* assist in the laboratory with media preparation, waste decontamination, wash-up, and other laboratory
* tasks as required.
