Kanyana Wildlife is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of native wildlife. With a focus on wildlife conservation, sustainability, and community education, Kanyana offers professional training, supports conservation research, and engages over 460 volunteers.
Role Overview
The CEO will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, overseeing operational efficiency, and ensuring financial stability to achieve Kanyana Wildlife’s mission. As the organization’s chief executive, the CEO will make critical decisions, manage resources, and act as the primary liaison between the Management Committee and daily operations. The CEO will also develop additional income streams, advance Kanyana’s vision, and ensure the organization's success and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Vision
* Vision and Direction: Develop and drive Kanyana’s strategic vision, ensuring alignment with wildlife conservation, community education, and sustainability goals.
* Corporate Decision-Making: Lead corporate decision-making and direction, setting the course for organizational growth and resilience.
* Revenue Development: Identify and establish new income streams, partnerships, and business opportunities to secure Kanyana's future and expand its impact.
Operational Oversight and Efficiency
* Daily Management: Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring effective resource use across all functions, including animal welfare, finance, HR, IT, and volunteer management.
* Building and Maintenance Oversight: Act as the primary point of contact for non-emergency facility issues, ensuring timely fixes and smooth operations.
* Crisis and Emergency Management (Fire Warden): Serve as one of Kanyana’s Fire Wardens, responsible for leading responses to fires and emergencies, implementing fire safety protocols, and maintaining readiness.
* Policy Implementation: Develop and implement policies that support operational excellence and uphold high standards in animal care, compliance, and safety.
Financial and Compliance Management
* Financial Strategy and Budgeting: Ensure the financial sustainability of Kanyana Wildlife by managing budgets, monitoring financial performance, and pursuing grants, donations, and partnerships.
* Legal and Compliance Standards: Oversee legal and regulatory compliance, maintaining ZAA accreditation and adhering to health, safety, and animal welfare standards.
Team and Volunteer Management
* Staff Leadership and Development: Recruit, develop, and inspire staff and volunteers, fostering a positive, mission-focused work culture.
* Capacity Building: Implement strategies to increase organizational capacity and support staff and volunteer efficiency as wildlife admissions rise.
Stakeholder Engagement and Advocacy
* Public Relations and Partnerships: Act as the primary spokesperson for Kanyana Wildlife, building strong relationships with government agencies, donors, partners, and the community.
* Advocacy and Representation: Lead efforts to advocate for wildlife welfare and environmental sustainability, representing Kanyana to stakeholders, government, and the public.
Program Development and Innovation
* Community Education and Outreach: Drive public education and training programs for community members, professionals, and partnering organizations.
* Innovation in Conservation Practices: Champion innovative approaches in animal rehabilitation and care, integrating technology and creative solutions.
Key Qualifications and Skills
* Leadership Experience: Proven experience in a senior leadership or CEO role, ideally within a nonprofit, conservation, or environmental organization.
* Financial and Operational Acumen: Strong background in financial management, budgeting, fundraising, and operational efficiency.
* Stakeholder Engagement Skills: Exceptional communication skills, with a history of building productive partnerships and advocating effectively for organizational goals.
* Strategic and Adaptable Thinking: Ability to balance day-to-day management with long-term strategic planning.
* Animal Welfare Knowledge: Understanding of animal welfare standards, conservation practices, and wildlife care.
* Familiarity with ZAA Accreditation Processes: Knowledge of best practices in animal welfare and related legal requirements.
* Experience in Conservation or Animal Welfare Organizations: Experience managing or volunteering within wildlife conservation or animal welfare organizations.
