The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent government agency that, in collaboration with Basin governments, manages the water resources of the Murray-Darling Basin in the national interest.
The First Nations Policy team is tasked with developing and guiding First Nations policy within the MDBA, with a primary focus on the 2026 review of the Basin Plan. A key aspect of this role is to support engagement with First Nations people and organisations across the Basin. This position will work closely with other MDBA teams, Commonwealth agencies, Basin States, and a wide range of stakeholders.
Specific Duties: Lead research and analysis on First Nations water management policy issues, providing recommendations to better recognise First Nations values and objectives in the Basin Plan. Coordinate First Nations input into policy development for the Basin Plan Review, utilizing negotiation and liaison skills with cultural competency. Develop strong working relationships with internal and external partners, especially First Nations groups. Create policy briefings, position papers, and reports on various policy issues from global to local scales. Identify risks and challenges to water reform implementation and develop innovative solutions. Capabilities: Communicate effectively and build respectful relationships with First Nations people. High-level research, analysis, and writing skills, with the ability to articulate complex matters to diverse audiences. Maximise potential and deliver quality outcomes individually and as a team. Uphold the MDBA's respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their heritage, knowledge, and cultural authority in the Murray-Darling Basin. Essential Requirements: Tertiary qualification in natural resource management, economics, or social sciences relevant to water resources management. Ability to interact face-to-face and virtually within the MDBA in both internal and external contexts. Ability to work collaboratively and productively in a virtual environment. Must be an Australian Citizen. Desirable Requirements: Experience working with First Nations groups in cultural and natural resource management, environmental and/or social sciences, or related disciplines. Baseline security clearance required. EL1 non-ongoing role for 12 months, with a possible 6-month extension (Fixed Term). Police Check and/or Ability to obtain and maintain a clearance. Located in Griffith, NSW.
