Job Title: Chief Legal Officer
About the Role:
The Department of Transport and Main Roads is seeking a highly experienced and strategic legal leader to lead its legal function. This is a key opportunity for a skilled legal professional to make a significant impact in shaping the department's legal strategy and direction.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide strategic, independent legal advice to the Executive Leadership Team on high-risk, complex and sensitive matters;
* Lead the development and maintenance of high-level expertise in key areas including statutory interpretation, intellectual property, commercial law, contract law, workplace law, constitutional law and administrative law;
* Implement modern digital processes, practices and data analytics to enhance operational efficiency and the performance of the branch;
* Develop and implement frameworks and guidelines for effective management of legal and legislative services and proactive strategies for early intervention in complex, sensitive and litigious matters;
* Oversee the procurement of external legal services, maintaining strong relationships with providers to ensure quality and value;
Requirements:
* 10+ years' post-admission experience, including demonstrated oversight and leadership of a legal function in a General Counsel, CLO, Head of Legal or equivalent role;
* Experience advising government clients or working within a government setting, demonstrating a strong understanding of public sector operations and the ability to navigate complex, ambiguous and political environments;
* Strong, demonstrable values-based leadership skills to manage and develop a large, diverse workforce;
* Superior technical legal knowledge and commercial acumen;
* Exceptional communication and engagement skills to establish and maintain collaborative and effective relationships with stakeholders;
* Outstanding analytical and conceptual abilities to identify and address complex issues;
