Where you will be working: In this role, you will cover referrals across both John Hunter Hospital (JHH) and John Hunter Children's Hospital (JHCH) as part of the Social Work Department's crisis response team.
You will join the Critical Care Social Work team at JHH, working independently after hours.
Your key responsibilities will include receiving handovers from the day staff, managing crisis situations that arise during your shift, and handing over cases to the on-call service or the next day's staff.
While the role requires independent work, you will still have support from the broader team and department.
This position involves an afternoon shift from 4:00 PM to 10:30 PM on Fridays and every second Saturday.
Ideally, the same person would cover both shifts, with additional opportunities to pick up extra shifts or weekend work to cover colleagues' planned or unplanned leave.
Staff are expected to pick up the Saturday shift in conjunction with weekday shifts to ensure they remain connected to the department, access supervision, attend mandatory training, and receive the support needed.
Working exclusively every second Saturday without weekday shifts is discouraged, as it can lead to isolation and insufficient support.
About the role: You will provide crisis response to various critical situations, including trauma (e.g., motor vehicle accidents, assaults, non-fatal suicide attempts), unexpected deaths on wards, child protection concerns, homelessness, and adolescent mental health or behavioral issues.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently and possess strong prioritization, crisis response, and trauma-informed care skills.
Before taking on shifts independently, you will have the opportunity to complete buddy shifts with another afternoon shift worker to ensure you are well-oriented with JHH, JHCH, and relevant processes.
You should also enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team and demonstrate strong organizational skills.
Supervision will be provided by the Team Leader of the Critical Care Team, the Service Manager, or an experienced clinician within the department.
Additionally, you will have access to training that aligns with your professional development needs, as identified by you and your supervisor.
