The College is home to a vibrant and diverse community, supported by staff including the Provost, Deputy Provost, the two Deans, and the Rector of the Jesuit Community.We are seeking a skilled and passionate Organist to join our team at Newman College. Reporting to the Newman College Director of Choir, the successful candidate will serve as the Organist for Sunday Church liturgies and act as an ambassador for our music program to cultivate an active and vibrant musical community. The role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to our liturgical life and collaborate with students, the choir, staff, and the wider College community.Key Responsibilities:
Play for major liturgies, including Sunday services (during the academic term), Easter liturgies, Christ the King, the First Sunday of Advent and special occasions such as the carol service, weddings, funerals, and masses with visiting groups.
Accompany the College Choir for rehearsals on Thursday evenings and Sundays, and before major liturgies and concerts involving the Choir.
Perform organ and piano music for concerts, formal dinners, and other special events as specified by the Director.
Participate in the annual Choir Camp, mid-year retreat, workshop days, and extra rehearsals for concerts as required.
Coordinate the music arrangements for weddings.
Collaborate in the selection of music for Masses and other liturgies involving the Choir.
Oversee the maintenance and care of the organ and piano, including coordination of tuning and repair schedules.
Assist in the selection of new instruments for the Chapel as needed.
Foster a culture of high-level musical practice and performance.
Model and encourage qualities in alignment with Catholic values.
Manage time effectively, including occasional recitals and working outside scheduled hours when required.
What you will need to be successful in this role:
Flexibility to work outside regular hours, particularly for special events and services.
Proven experience as an accompanist and liturgical organist/pianist, with strong skills in sight-reading, score reading, transposition, and improvisation.
A genuine passion for working within a faith-aligned environment, with a strong commitment to the values of the Catholic Church.
Relevant qualifications in music, with an informed understanding of Catholic liturgical traditions.
Ability to prepare and organise music effectively prior to rehearsals and services.
Experience working with younger people and fostering a positive, inclusive environment.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
