Systems Development Manager, Region Services
Job ID: 2884340 | Amazon Support Services Pty Ltd
We are looking for a strong Systems Development Manager and Operations Leader to contribute to the growth of our organization within Amazon Web Services.
The Region Services team redefines the way AWS designs, builds, and operates AWS regions to enable new AWS Cloud Infrastructure and Services offerings to customers across every industry and of every size, including start-ups, enterprises, and public sector organizations.
You will be passionate about both development and operations, and have a strong desire to learn about Amazon's development lifecycle. This is a true DevOps role; you will be both allowed and expected to follow problems all the way to the end and work on implementing real solutions, not just quick fixes. You will want to dive deep and understand how these large systems work.
At Amazon, we hire hands-on managers at all levels. This leader must be able to dive deep into the details on business, operations and engineering. We need a technical, detail-oriented leader who can build and grow organizations. You will excel at hiring and developing engineers and lead a charter which grows as your organization grows. Our services operate at large scale with critical workloads, so passion and discipline around operational excellence is key. You thrive working with empowered, world-class engineers and meeting world-class challenges. Finally, with your strong ownership bias, you have an infectious desire to continually improve how we deliver on behalf of our customers.
By working together on behalf of our customers, we are building the future one innovative product, service, and idea at a time. Are you ready to embrace the challenge? Come build the future with us.
This position can be based in Sydney, or Melbourne.
Key job responsibilities
1. Develop and deploy operational tools to automate processes and reduce operational overhead
2. Hire, Develop, and Mentor team members.
3. Work with other engineers to build and manage massively scaled services
4. Work with other engineers to diagnose and resolve customer issues
5. Track the health of our services, identify and fix problems on complex systems with massive scale
6. Collaborate with some of the leading minds in distributed systems
The candidate should also be familiar with Linux, including the following:
1. Various distros and their corresponding package management tools
2. Permissions and permissions management
3. System logging and auditing
4. Log parsing using grep, awk, sed, cut, tr, etc
5. Remote access via ssh
6. Knowledge of procfs & sysfs
7. Linux tools (ip, ifconfig, netstat, tcpdump, strace, netcat, ping, telnet, etc)
8. System Monitoring Tools (top, *stat tools, etc)
9. DNS and tools (bind, host, dig, nslookup, etc)
10. Runlevel management tools (systemd, rc.d, inittab, chkconfig, etc)
The candidate should also be familiar with generic development tools and best practices:
1. Git (or other CM tools)
2. Agile development
3. CI/CD or development pipelines
A day in the life
In this role, you will collaborate with Product Teams to design solutions that make efficient use of resources and technologies. You will bring a detail-oriented approach and excellent problem-solving abilities, backed by a deep understanding of distributed system design and delivery. Your contributions will leverage cross-functional business and technical skills, assessing and managing risks, measuring and reporting on progress, anticipating and resolving bottlenecks, providing escalation management, making tradeoffs, and balancing business needs with technical constraints.
You will drive engineering deliverables through influence rather than authority, manage repair requests in a high-volume environment, and respond to high-severity events. Regular presentations to senior leadership will require you to synthesize problems and solutions into a simple and consumable manner. Additionally, you will be responsible for data collection, analytics, and dashboard creation to help others identify the best paths for business improvement.
Expect the opportunity to travel globally as needed to manage and support team initiatives.
