Opening in 1973, Emerson has made a huge impact in the Specialist School sector pioneering various initiatives which all result in a better, more inclusive learning environment for the students.
The success of educational programs at Emerson School gathered momentum in the 1990s. The school reached an enrolment of 200 in 1995, which was previously beyond the wildest dreams of special educators. The trend continued unabated with an enrolment of 300 being reached in 2003. The figure of 400 was reached in 2013, which has been maintained to this day.

On paper, our school provides for students with mild intellectual disabilities. However, in reality, we are unlocking the skills and talents of students who formerly were unaware of their potential to learn and contribute to our society. Our school now operates on two campuses whereby its capacity to serve the students of Victoria has been greatly enhanced and includes a brand new Administration-Senior School Block which opened its doors in July this year. The creation of a new Technology Wing will begin in January 2024.

Selection CriteriaBackground Emerson School provides educational programs for up to 400 students across two campuses. Our school provides for Primary and Secondary students with intellectual processing disabilities.
We are looking for a Psychologist who can really make a difference in our wonderful school.
Selection Criteria: Suitable experience in the initiation, development and implementation of programmes, procedures and policies that foster resilience in children and young people and address their physical, social and emotional needs to support their educational needs.Highly developed capacity to assist, conceptualise and analyse more complex student well-being issues and translate to improving student wellbeing outcomes within the school.Capacity to provide leadership within a multidisciplinary team delivering a range of well-being and student support services.Highly developed communication, networking and interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise effectively with a wide range of people within school and in the educational community.Qualifications Required Essential: Full registration as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable: Membership of the College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists.
Typical Duties Provide a high level of psychological support to our students to improve student learning and well-being.Assessment of students and the preparation of reports for the Disability Inclusion program.Provide advice about student learning and wellbeing within our multidisciplinary allied health team.Support teachers in the development of educational programmes in respect to the individual needs of students.Provide professional advice in relation to issues involving student well-being.Liaise effectively with a wide range of people including students' families, DHHS, hospitals and other professionals, regarding the support needs of students.Additional duties as specified by the School Principal.RoleWill usually be a member of the leadership team who is accountable for the development and delivery of key services that are integral to the effective operation of a school/s. Provides a range of services and/or undertakes the analysis of complex problems that form part of the policy framework.
A school or group of schools would need to have the necessary diversity and complexity to create a role at range 5. Management of a major school or district initiative, project or Department targeted strategy would be an indicator depending on the breadth of management responsibilities.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee's position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.
ResponsibilitiesAs a member of the leadership team within a school/s responsible for the management of the following:
Management of recruitment policy and procedures.Management of the development and delivery of professional development programs within the school/s.Management of the development and implementation of human resource planning, strategies and guidelines.Management of the delivery and quality of professional student support services involving multi-disciplinary functions e.g. therapist, psychological and social work services.Provision of expert and authoritative advice regarding workforce planning for all school operations and services.Management of the school/s budget and financial performance.Who May ApplyIndividuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfill the specific requirements of the position.
