Computational Biology Lead, RemoteWho we areCell Bauhaus is creating virtual cell technology to accelerate the discovery of sustainable solutions to the world's most pressing problems. We integrate mechanistic modelling and machine learning to build predictive cell models that enable rational design of interventions that give cells new and desired functionalities. Whether it's getting microbes to produce sustainable bio-molecules or reprogramming cells to respond to treatments - we are bringing rational engineering and design principles to biology to enable scalable solutions for planetary and human health. Our work is part-funded by the Gates Foundation under the Accelerator Program whose goal is to conceive, design, test, and prepare the ecosystem for fundamentally novel platform technologies with breakthrough potential (grant number: INV-079292).RoleWe are looking for an experienced Computational Biology Lead to play a meaningful role in shaping our journey towards rational engineering and design for biology. As the Computational Biology Lead, you will work with other cross-functional Leads to develop our core platform that underpins the company technology and business strategy. It's an exciting opportunity to carve out your contribution to a software platform that will transform the way that we produce everything from food to fuel and facilitate our transition toward a sustainable future. You will join a growing and friendly team of software engineers, ML researchers, and computational biologists. What you will doUse your deep technical experience and scientific knowledge to plan, lead, and deliver original research in modelling sub-cellular processes with minimal guidance.Undertake analysis of omics datasets, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, or other data types.Take the lead in shaping research directions aligned with the Computational Biology strategy, designing impactful projects that drive our company's goals forward.Serve as a subject matter and technical expert within a multi-disciplinary team, openly sharing your knowledge and expertise with colleagues.Contribute to the development of our Cell Engineering Platform, working with engineers to architect, build, and operate the platform's components in a cross-disciplinary working environment.Provide documentation, guidance, and communication on computational biology to the wider organisation.Represent Cell Bauhaus in external engagements, including collaborations with partners.EssentialProven expertise in computational biology, mathematical biology, or related field with a PhD and post-doc or industry experience.Extensive programming or scientific computing experience using any mainstream programming languages - our stack is scientific Python on top of a Postgres database running on Kubernetes, with some Julia components.Familiarity with biological data including e.g. experimental design, data generation and quality control, and statistical analysis.Broad background in computational biology and modelling.Experience leading small teams and/or supervising students.Ability to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to a variety of audiences.Nice to HaveExperience with metabolic modelling.Expertise in modelling stochastic processes.Experience in statistical inference and optimisation.InclusivityWe are building an inclusive environment where collaboration thrives, learning is shared, and diverse perspectives drive impactful outcomes. We are committed to equal opportunity employment, welcoming all backgrounds and identities. If you need accommodations, please let us know.Remote WorkingWe embrace flexible work arrangements, but at the same time acknowledge that collaboration is central to our culture of knowledge sharing and relationship building. We are based in Melbourne and would require some of your working hours to overlap with our working day.
