The role will close when an offer is accepted by a suitable candidate The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities. What Will You Do? In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Women’s Bail Advocacy Program (WBAP) team, within the Criminal Law Practice. You will assist our multidisciplinary team in delivering the WBAP, which advocates for appropriate bail conditions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands women to reduce avoidable remand and provides trauma-informed wrap-around support to Women in contact with the criminal legal system. Provide high quality and culturally safe legal representation to Aboriginal clients Provide considered, independent, balanced and professional legal advice in relation to criminal charges and related legal proceedings Appear as an advocate for Aboriginal people in NSW courts at all levels, including first appearance bail/s 74 applications, list matters, complex hearings and sentences, and committal proceedings in the Local Court; District Court appeals, sentences and trials (instructing counsel and appearing as an advocate in consultation with supervisors); and Supreme Court Bail hearings Work closely with the Women’s BAP team to ensure the provision of timely, holistic legal and non-legal support and referrals to all clients supported by the Women’s BAP Who Are We Looking For? A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate: Legal qualifications and a current Practising Certificate issued by the Law Society of NSW In-depth knowledge of the criminal law, including practice and procedure Experience appearing in bail proceedings, complex hearings, and District Court appeals and sentences Highly advanced, trauma-informed communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal concepts to Aboriginal clients and community members Demonstrated understanding of the specific systemic, social and intersecting issues impacting Aboriginal women in contact with the criminal legal system Demonstrated awareness of available culturally safe services and supports for Aboriginal women in contact with the criminal legal system Willingness and ability to travel for work purposes as required Why Join Us?
