The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill the roles of **Campaign Managers** (EL1 and APS 6), **Campaign Officers** (APS 5 and APS 4), **Communication Managers** (EL1 and APS 6) and **Communication Officers** (APS 5 and APS 4) in our Census Communication team, part of the Census Field Operations Branch, to support delivery of the 2026 Census Communication approach, including a government advertising campaign to reach, engage and motivate the public to participate in the next Census.
Communication Manager/Officer roles may also become available in the Strategic Communication and the Media and Social Media sections within the Strategic Engagement and Performance Branch.
**About the roles**
These roles will contribute to the ABS purpose by enhancing the way ABS interacts with the community and its stakeholders through the development of high quality and effective communication strategies, messages and content. They ensure ABS communication is customer-focused and builds community trust. They ensure communications are timely and effective to support ABS staff's ability to do their job, their understanding of corporate directions and priorities, and customer focus.
Responsibilities may include:
- leading and collaborating on the delivery of a national government advertising campaign
- developing and implementing integrated communication campaign strategies, in accordance with government and ABS processes and priorities
- managing a range of external stakeholders on the development of the 2026 Census advertising campaign, including creative, media, public relations, Indigenous, multicultural and research agencies
- identifying communication opportunities and managing risks to maintain and promote the value of the Census and the ABS
- writing and editing content for use across channels, including key messages, social media, media releases, website and stakeholder outreach
- at EL 1 and APS 6 level - leading and managing staff and undertaking more complex tasks.
Note: it's expected there may be a need for occasional work outside of core business hours and interstate travel during the operational phase of the 2026 Census. Appropriate allowances (e.g. overtime, travel, etc) will be paid.
**What we are looking for (selection criteria)**
Essential for all roles:
- strong written and oral communication skills
- demonstrated experience in developing and implementing communication strategies and content for the general public (e.g. website content, social media, media or stakeholder engagement collateral)
- excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage complex projects and competing priorities under tight deadlines
- ability to build and sustain positive relationships with team members, and internal and external stakeholders.
Essential for Campaign Manager/Officer roles:
- experience working on government advertising campaigns.
Highly desirable for all roles:
- completion of a communication focused degree or diploma such as a strategic communication, digital media, public relations, journalism or marketing
