The Art Technician role provides support to the teaching staff and students of the Visual Arts Department, maintaining adequate supplies of consumables and equipment. This involves preparing for and cleaning up after lessons, as well as assisting with art processes. It is a full-time, ongoing (term-time only) position.
About the Role
Main responsibilities include:
1. Managing specialist IT equipment such as photo and video cameras, studio lights, microphones, projectors, CNC laser cutter and printers.
2. Overseeing specialised equipment in other areas, e.g. ceramics, screen-printing, and/or painting.
3. Ensuring that equipment like photocopiers, printing presses, kilns, and laser cutters are in safe working order, and arranging for maintenance or service when necessary.
4. Preparing materials for reuse by trimming, resizing, and processing them.
5. Inspecting cutting tools, carving instruments, and other special art equipment.
6. Providing technical assistance to staff and students during lessons on laser cutting, sculpture, ceramics, painting, and photography.
7. Assisting with firing, glazing, recycling, mixing glazes and slips, packing, firing, and unloading kilns.
8. Ordering and receiving deliveries of equipment and materials.
9. Maintaining stock levels of materials.
10. Auditing, labelling, and managing resources.
11. Creating and updating an inventory system for books, slides, and videos stored in the department.
12. Conducting an annual stocktake of equipment in all studios.
About You
Previous experience in art and design or relevant tertiary qualifications are preferred.
Proficiency in computer skills, particularly in Word, Excel, and Creative Suite (LightBurn, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro).
Familiarity with new technologies and techniques used in specialist areas.
Excellent communication skills and ability to build effective relationships with staff and students.
An appreciation for student-specific needs and a desire to contribute actively to the life of the Visual Arts Department.
The successful candidate will be required to undergo a Victorian Working with Children Check (Employee) and a National Criminal History Check.
