This is work that may include some supervisory duties.
Employees perform a variety of mechanical and building trade tasks.
Although performance of skilled work is required in many of the repairs made, skills required in any one type of trade are usually less than would be required of a journeyman in that field.
Work differs between positions, but primary emphasis is upon mechanical ability and skills as applied to a department's maintenance activities.
Work is performed independently, but frequently is inspected upon completion.
The days and hours for this position: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Inspects buildings, machinery and/or equipment to locate need for repair or maintenance work.Makes building repairs, cuts and replaces glass; installs doors; patches cement walks, floors and foundations; patches and lays tile; and makes and installs shelves, partitions and other wooden parts.Repairs wiring, switches, fixtures and motors.Installs, services, and repairs heating plants and/or repair various types of small stationary or portable mechanical equipment.Water Distribution:
Ensures the fire hydrant branch valves are clearly identifiable and operational.Raises fire hydrants to grade as needed.Troubleshoots and rebuilds various types of fire hydrants.May supervise helpers or relieve a supervisor of a crew.Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.These examples are not intended to be all-inclusive.

Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, parts and materials used in mechanical, building and/or fire hydrant maintenance and repair work.Working knowledge of building construction and building equipment operation.Knowledge of work hazards and ability to take necessary safety precautions.Ability to read and interpret technical repair manuals.Ability to effectively use small precision tools for close tolerance work.Ability to climb stairs and ladders and to bend, twist, and reach as necessary to repair equipment.Ability to tolerate exposure to chemicals and fluids commonly used in building and equipment maintenance and repair and airborne environmental nuisances associated with machine exhaust and open grounds.Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds; to lift and carry up to 300 pounds with the assistance of another person.Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of pressure using tools that tighten, loosen, or cut.Ability to shovel snow and lift the load up to four feet high.Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist.Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates.Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information.May require ability to read and interpret water distribution maps.Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with an air brake endorsement.An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.Required Experience and Training: Two years of experience as a skilled worker in building and mechanical, OR water distribution system, repair and maintenance work, or applicable trade school training.A Kansas Class B Commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement is required.
Ability to acquire the air brake endorsement within 2 months of employment.Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.Preferred Experience and Training: Previous Plumbing experience.Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
